A place where metal is happy and not disgusting. A place where somebody would rather message you on Facebook or text you when you're nowhere near them in the show.
A place where one man's smile is another man's laughter.
A place where the boisterous voices of jokes and YouTube discussion outweigh any serious topic.
A place where it's okay to have star tattoos covering your flabby forearm.
A place where MetalArchives reviews are that of a fact.
A place moshing and dancing lost it's edge.
A place where everybody knows your name and is friends with you on Facebook.
A place where threads are made about you on a dying board that is absolutely horrible now thanks to the FUNDERGROUND.

The FUNDERGROUND is totally useless. It's what happens when post-PC zombie propaganda bots invade your genre and try to make it "nice."

I can't fault RTTP for this. Metal-Archives may have more to answer for, by both being doctrinaire about what metal is, and then accepting every *core band to use a squeal.

I say we go back to the first Graveland album and destroy anything that isn't as good. That would eliminate 90% of post-2000 "metal"

Yeah, Sungwood Jeong when I read that name I'm like hey I met that guy, Aversed opened up CTMetalFest in 2011 and went on right before Dark Passenger, all really young guys (16 - 18?) but surprisingly good for their age. The kid can play guitar.

He did not show up looking like anything like that picture, however. WTF? That's so unmetal it feels like kryptonite to me looking at it. I find yet another reason to be thankful for not having a personal Facebook account and being subjected to people's grotesque appearances at their worst moments, or subjecting them to mine.

if something as trivial as a few dorks in the mosh pit is enough to ruin a good show for you, maybe you're the one who is in the wrong scene, because if it was really as metal as you seem to think you are, a few posers here and there would make no difference. anyone who has been around for more than a year knows that there have ALWAYS been falses in metal, but most of you so-called elite probably dont even know that because youre too busy making a big deal out of these fags to try to keep peoples attention off of the fact that youve only been here since 2004

Yeah, I think that's what is missing in today's generation of metal fans. In the past you had to really put in some work to discover great music. Attend shows, read zines, write to bands, tape trading or even lending albums, and taking a chance on certain albums, not knowing whether or not your money is going to be well spent or a complete bust.

It was exciting to go to Newbury Comics when they catered to underground music. I would basically work just to drop my entire paycheck on albums. I'd order from some cool distros, and that's how I built my entire collection. I can't bring myself to part with any of my CD's, tapes, or records. I spent the money on them for a reason, I didn't purchase them so they could be resold.

This was a time when bands seemed larger than life and the music that was being produced felt like it was meant to be brought into our world; that it wasn't just random.

toggletoggle post by ÆRK at Feb 14,2013 11:41am
exactly. very well said mike. i will never know what it's like to buy an album blind or 'worship' a band ever again. it seems cheesy to say but the untouchable mysticism bands had back in the day is gone and it's not just nostalgia talking. music is cheaper than air now.

I was thinking about it last night. I only remember one instance when I was a young metal nerd and an older guy was a dick about it. I went to see Slayer somewhere and saw a pair of dudes in identical Soilent Green shirts. I asked them where they got them and one of them said all smug that he got it when Soilent Green played the Middle East. I explained that I was 17 so I couldn't have gone. Got the "whatever poser" treatment, got butthurt and called him an asshole.

Here's the thing though. Metal was such a tough thing to come by in the 90's that usually when you met someone who listened to the same stuff you were into there was a modicum of mutual respect. To find out about even bands like Emperor and Morbid Angel took at least a little bit of legwork, and it was real easy to ID the people who didn't do their homework.

If you met an older dude with a bigger music collection than you it was a learning experience. They were psyched to share because you were psyched to listen. It was a whole different dynamic that I couldn't even expect nowadays n00bz to wrap their brains around.

Specifically not nowadays n00bz like niptoucher

As the eldest member of the Funderground, I would like to extend an olive branch to those who wish to crush our good time. You claim that metal is about expression of oneself, yet you lack the understanding that another may not be as glum and morose as you are and then proceed to attack them. Come to our side and together we can smash the walls that hold the negative connotations of metal and build a new, metal underground built on freedom of expression, fun, bowls of razorblades and fireballs and finally cat memes.

It will take some time, I know, but the Matrix wasn’t built in a day..

P.S. BSV if you want that bass I’ll meet you wherever and buy you lunch.

This is all bullshit. I'm sick of reading my friends get bashed for no reason at all. Stop all the nonsense and just let it be. You guys are making the new england scene a horrible scene when it has all the best bands around. I don't even want to support assholes who think they are better then everyone else just because they were born 5 years before. It's fucking child like.. I don't know who is younger. Us or you..

Incorrect. We're too busy jerking off in our moms' basements to ruin anything other than our new egyptian cotton sheets.

Nail and head. This is something I've actually been pondering quite a bit as of late and somehow a lot of conversations always seem to end up at this topic. It was always exciting to find some weird new band be it though a friend/a zine/on your own browsing thought a record store, ect... Even if you ended up not really liking what you heard, that was part of the mystery.

Of course you did run into the occasional asshole as you described. I've met more than a few territorial "I was here first" types that had the attitude that you somehow shouldn't even be allowed to like a certain type of band or style because you weren’t there whey they first started.

-the one good thing that could eventually come from this is that the funderground queers will eventually become so angry and miserable from all the shit being talked about them that they will actually be able to experience how much it sucks being a real metalhead.
