I was thinking about it last night. I only remember one instance when I was a young metal nerd and an older guy was a dick about it. I went to see Slayer somewhere and saw a pair of dudes in identical Soilent Green shirts. I asked them where they got them and one of them said all smug that he got it when Soilent Green played the Middle East. I explained that I was 17 so I couldn't have gone. Got the "whatever poser" treatment, got butthurt and called him an asshole.

Here's the thing though. Metal was such a tough thing to come by in the 90's that usually when you met someone who listened to the same stuff you were into there was a modicum of mutual respect. To find out about even bands like Emperor and Morbid Angel took at least a little bit of legwork, and it was real easy to ID the people who didn't do their homework.

If you met an older dude with a bigger music collection than you it was a learning experience. They were psyched to share because you were psyched to listen. It was a whole different dynamic that I couldn't even expect nowadays n00bz to wrap their brains around.

Specifically not nowadays n00bz like niptoucher
