New site? Maybe some day.
I'm looking to get a spider II HD150 head - but if something comes up, i might have to settle for a spider III HD75, which seems significantly less, well, good. (I'm on a tight budget)
have any of you ever played a spider II/III and what did you think? is it worth buying? |
I personally only like Line 6 for bedroom practice and demo recording purposes; trying to use a Line 6 in a live setting is annoying as shit since all the default settings reset themselves if you change channels at all, unless there's some secret I don't know about changing the defaults. Some of the channels and effects sound way too synthetic to me as well. |
got any suggestions then? I can't really afford anything more than 300 right now. 350/400 would be pushing it, but in a week or two I mgith be able to horde enough cash to get something around that. |
I'm not really sure of any decent amps for around $300 unless you find something used. I'd poke around craigslist, or ask Niccolai on here. He's a fucking encyclopedia of gear. |
Peavy VTMs and Sovtek MIGs can be found on ebay for under 400 dollars fairly regularly and are both great sounding tube amps that you will probably be much happier with than the Line 6. |
they tend to sound very digital |
does that thing get a lot of feedback? it doesnt look like there's a clean channel on it either, which would be a huge drawback. |
haha peavey butcher i remember those things |
I have the spider II 112 75 watts i like it, i want an new amp since its old, but it works for my bed room anything else would be way too loud for my house! damn i want a half stack and be able to play it. |
on a side note i heard good things about the peavey valve king.
i believe its around five hundred. |
i saw it at guitar center cheaper than that, I might get one just for the hell of it. It was pretty good |
I play a Spider II and it is completely gay compared to my other guitarist HD147. I know, I really do feel like a loser playing next to him...and that's not even considering his Vigir and his absurd shredding ability. |
I know neversaynever plays spider II's.
they also play in a dropped b tuning if i remember correctly.
[ i know this cause i wanted to try out but they are too hardcore for me haha]
I think all the guys with the modeling technology quit line 6. Everything they've released since the podXT and HD147/vetta2 has been steadily worse and worse.
After some recent experiments with Amplitube 2 and Guitar Rig 2 I think that line6 is no longer top dog of digital amp modeling.
However, the line 6 floor xt live is a pretty solid unit. My friend got one with all the extra model packs, and running through a stereo power amp into a set of marshall 4X12's it sounds glorious. |
The spider line in general is made from pretty cheap components, the sound models are weak, the footswitch is an extra 100 dollars, and they break like noones buisiness.
Don't get me wrong, line 6 has some okay stuff, but not in the spider line. If you're doing it for the effests, then just get an amp that doesn't suck and buy a podrack or floorxt when you have the money.
in your price range, I'd look into used migs, 5150s, shockwaves, blue voodoos, or maybe a used hellcat if you can find one. |
Despite the Spider II being the lowest on the Line 6 chain I always ask myself: "Would I ever even consider using the 600+ effects and crap I'd get with a higher end model?" |

Dan from Nadir uses one of those (or used to), if that's any kind of endorsement. |
spider heads cant get loud enough for shows. every band that ive seen with spider heads just cant get over the volume of a drummer. i have no problem with some line 6 gear (the second generation flextones are definetly thebest) there are plenty of cheap head options:
used peavey xxl
used peavey vtm 60 or 120 (youll need a boost pedal to get to metal though)
used peavey ultra 60, 120 or plus
used crate gx-130c
used line 6 flextone II head
used peavey valveking
used crate blue voodoo
take in mind that some of those are tube heads & will require more money for yearly retubes but all these heads will sound awesome for metal and should be found in the 300 range. read craigslist daily and check daddys.com for their used database.
p.s. stay away from the marshall MG series.

Stay away from the marshal anything series. (mode4 excluded) |

i just lost about 75% of my respect for you. mode four is up there for top of the crap marshall in my book. its like a really loud avt/mg combined. the new vintage modern and jvm heads are the best thing theybe produced IMO since the jcm 800. |
there's some used 5150's on ebay for under 300. what about those?
and how much would new tubes cost? |
BLEAAAGHH
Whenever i try and plug into a Marshall there is a ten minute period of me just looking at it turning my head trying to develope a game plan as to how I can make it sound good... then when I think I have a strategy, I turn it on and I immediately wish I were just playing through a ZOOM effects pedal.
I just don't understand Marshalls.. They are the Mac computer of the guitar amp world haha. |

a used 5150 for 3 c-notes is a VERY good deal. The cheapest you usually see them go for is 500, or maybe 450/400. Those auctions will probably end with those amps hitting at LEAST the 400 dollar mark.
tube prices vary, but can be anywhere from 50 dollars a pair to 200 dollars a pair.
mm yeah, it's not over for 9 days.
there's a peavy supreme xl for less than 200 over in 5 hours - any good?
(sorry for all the questions, I just dont want to waste my money on a shit head) |
I personally don't like the XL, and I probably wouldn't rush to win that auction for an amp you haven't tried.
If I were you, I'd hit up guitar center and try out a few amps, then search for them used.
maybe try out a crate shockwave as well. Great solid state amps. |
I recently purchased a brand new Shockwave at Guitar Center for $350 or $400; they had in their system as a GX350 or something like that...enlighten him Niccolai, you know those model numbers, haha. |
i honestly dont understand your guys' infatuations with the shockwave heads.
the used gx-130c head is gonna shock all over your shitwaves, and im getting it for 170 bucks. |

it sounds like you dont like el34s. |
I think I have come close to making my Marshall AVT150 sound really good. I'm cranking a wah with a good balanced eq. It's a little nasally but it's heavy and the leads sound amazing. |

I guess, in all honesty, my biggest criticism with the Spider II is that there is no 'direct out' option when it comes to recording. I record quite a bit of shit direct from my amp to the computer and I'd rather run it as a direct out than putting a mic in front of the amp to the computer. When I record shit like this I like to run it from the amp to the computer without fucking around with mics. I know dick about the spider III, but, from what I can assume they probably have fixed that problem. |

the headphone jack is the direct out.
i use it to record my stuff when i'm bored.
but i'm kinda bored with the amp so i mess around with logic and stuff to get better sounds from it. |
too late, I was low on cash and needed to buy something before I spent it all on useless shit. |

I've tried that as well. But, I honestly thought that the sound quality was garbage and my guitar tone actually sounded like it was coming out of a set of headphones. There wasn't enough meat to and I really didn't want to roll with that sound at all.
i enjoy the mode 4
dave from vital uses one and so did al from goratory. |
that doesnt make them good. |
Well, I gotta say - I jammed tonight using a 75W Spider II combo, and - for studio/recording/practice purposes - it really performed. I wouldn't want to play a show with it unless I had to, but if you've got the capability to mic it through monitors, it's loud as fuck. The amp modeling is good for a recording environment, too - we got some decent sounding scratch tracks with just the presets. No halfstack, but it is what it is. |
Anybody know anything about a "Peavey Windsor?" 100w tube amp for $319 ("Buy it Now", current bid is $269). Could be an option, I don't know. Gearheads? |

i never cared for his mode 4 sound in goratory, sounded way better when he was using his rack setup. daves sounds good because hes dave, he could play through any amp and sound disgusting. |
