Fair enough, I'll be sure to file 'METAL metal' alongside my other avoid-at-all-cost genres like Swedecore, mallcore, jock death, nu-metal and Fairy metal.

Yeah, all the nu-metal fags suddenly switched over to metal blade and roadrunner bands when Uranium, MTV2, AAF, and Revolver decided that nu-metal was dead. I've seen quite a few myspace proflies go from

"I like wikked sic metal like slipknot, mudvayne, mushroomhead, twytch, SOAD, Staind, Korn, Marylin Manson"

to

"I only like real metal none of that gay emo shit. I like BTBAM, Glass Casket, Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, and I guess one or two nu metal bands that I used to like, BUT I LIKE CRADLE OF FILTH NOW SO IT'S OK!!!! Also I've seen Cannibal Holocaust 174 times since I heard about how metal it was to watch it last week. Did I mention I've seen CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST?"

oh god, i remember seeing atreyu at one of the metalfests a couple of years ago, and i think i can honestly say it was the gayest show i've ever seen.

but i agree with many people on the board in that kids into metal nowadays need to learn their roots.
a lot of kids think that nile, decapitated, dying fetus, cryptopsy etc... are really original and something special, but i'd be willing to bet that they've never even heard of classics like "left hand path" or "blood fire death", and i'd also bet they wouldn't even appreciate the tremendous impact those records had:
"oh, the new cephalic carnage is way more brutal and technical" "dying fetus has wicked sick breakdowns" fuck that! entombed had spirit! bathory played from the fucking heart! death metal nowadays is a lot of technical bullshit, and competiton for the fastest blast beats.
give me hellhammer over cephalic carnage any day of the fuckin week.

Totally correct, sir, the 'jock death' mentality, it's faster and more brutal so that makes it necessarily better. Something I simply cannot agree with. I enjoy brutality when it's effective and works within the song, and I do enjoy a lot of the new bands myself. Nile, Cephalic Carnage, etc. But there's a reason I still remember my 'Left Hand Path', 'Nocturnal Silence' and 'Realm of Chaos' albums and still listen to them over a decade later, and it's not just because they were brutal for their era.

Well said. Varg Vikernes has some of the purest motivations of anyone playing metal music...have you read his essays? They have a strict relevance to this argument, since one of the reasons he created Burzum was to rebel against the entire 'jock death' thing.

http://www.burzum.org

I think it might be in the entry about the formation of the band, Chapter I or II.

I'm not a fan of BDM whatsoever, what they play was fast and technical in 1995 when it was called At the Gates, and they even have particular tunes which are simply At the Gates riffs and note patterns with the notes changed, same progression, same tempo changes, etc. As if we wouldn't notice.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 26,2005 3:50pm
ok, I take back the not giving a shit part of my statement. I can appreciate bands having real philosophies and being about something more than fun...I also respect the history behind a lot of this kind of music.

however, I've been really annoyed lately at how much emphasis people put on these genre wars...it's music...you either like it or don't...I don't know why the existence of music you don't like should really consume a person.

I dunno, I have pudding to eat...less typing.

Heheh, I actually do like almost all genres of metal man, I apologize if I don't come across that way. It's a metal board though, you know, metal fans are pretty passionate about all this stuff. So we argue and agree, on and on.

i've been curious about the Disembowelment album for a while, i keep looking at it, but for some reason i never buy it.
i totally respect DrinkHardThrashHard's and Yeti's opinions; back in the late 80's-early 90's, death/black metal wasn't always about brutality for its own sake, it had feeling, and, when done right, it expressed a very bleak, violent, cynical and nihilistic worldview(darkthrone, entombed, etc...) nowadays it's all about technical skill and trendy breakdowns, which sometimes sounds cool, and fun to listen to, but like you guys said, there's no feeling.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Oct 26,2005 3:56pm
Right, and part of that simply is it's been done to death, really, it's not always easy for a band today to maintain that level of emotion and originality.

You are totally correct about the late 80s though, I still have not heard many bands today that can parallel the sheer bleak brutality of an early Bolt Thrower record, no matter how simple that was musically to perform.

No, you come across well informed, which is why I took back the "I don't give a shit" thing...

I guess lately I've just noticed that a lot of people with basically similar tastes are divided, sometimes angrily, over some very subtle things. So much so, that if you try to take from many different styles of metal instead of staying true to some archetype when making your own music, you will actually lose listeners altogether who may have found some common ground with another element of your music.

...and I guess I wouldn't bother to concern myself with this if I wasn't also passionate about this stuff. I wouldn't have taken the time to know the difference between "real grind" and "all the bands that just tack 'grind' to their name"...

being in a band that doesn't really strive to be one particular thing makes you very aware of the whole genre thing...my band has been called metalcore, and will continue to be called metalcore probably...and that's such a dirty word these days, but it's basically true. Taking away the stigma, it's not the end of the world.

I don't know,

sigh.

I don't like the overemphasis on these things nowadays...but I don't think that there is objectively no feeling...

I'm 100% certain that there are bands that rely on these things that feel nothing from them...but I find it hard to believe that it's an empty exercise for everyone.

Okay, I will grant you that, but aggression IS a feeling, which is I think what we are saying. Most of these brutal death bands don't even sound remotely aggressive to me, they are simply playing it safe and completely by the numbers...I mean, there are definitely still plenty of bands with a lot of real sounding aggression, I guess it's just oversaturated is all.

And there is no death metal quite as disturbing as Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew', that much is for sure, no matter how gore-soaked the lyrics are.

toggletoggle post by mark fucking richards at Oct 26,2005 5:27pm
i think everyone has done a good job describing their opinions on music; all of them are true, and there are a shitload of other opinions that can be true, solely because music is a form of art, and all forms of art should definitely have a personal attachment, whether to the person(s) who created the art or those who experience it. i listen to music for probably every single reason it is created, excluding obvious reasons like money, trends, pleasing the masses, etc.

i listen to pretty much every form of music in one form or another, whether i like it or not. the only forms of music i HATE are country, emo, and "pop" which i consider to engulf such styles as nu-metal, bubble gum pop, all this new wave and retro bullshit, 99% of the "hip hop," if you can really call it that, that is consumed by the public eye, etc.

when it comes to heavier music, feeling is always the most prevalent and overwhelming, in a good way. when i write a song, i don't think to myself "alright, it's time to create the most technical or brutal sounding music ever just for the fuck of it." i just start playing, and if i feel that technicality is needed, or the fastest speed picking i can humanly produce sounds right, that's what feels right to me.

i definitely hear a lack of feeling in the most modern music that is attracting the most attention, but sometimes i just don't care. if it sounds good and some sort of integrity is there, i'm all for it. bands like black dahlia murder definitely rip off at the gates and some of their peers, but i can tolerate it since it's not done very poorly. it's fun music, but it definitely gets old quick. there are a great number of bands that i consider far worse than BDM in this aspect, especially since they've been doing it since before it really surfaced as being " the cool thing to do".

i could go on forever, but i don't think this is a novel forum, haha

toggletoggle post by mark fucking richards at Oct 26,2005 5:34pm
80s pop isn't as bad as today's pop, since there was at least some sort of originality and 'breakthrough' quality stuff that no one ever really thought to do with music besides a few people ahead of their time in previous decades. today it's abound with assholes who want to make quick money while only sacrificing every morale in this world, haha

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Oct 26,2005 5:35pm

It's on the first CD, it parallel's the song 'Slaughter of the Soul' extremely closely, with the groove section and everything. I'll try and figure it out but of course I don't own the BDM CD.
