Hailing from just outside the main dregs of Boston -- Allston, to be exact -- Big Dumb Animal is what was once described by an audience member as "a band.”
The bullied offspring of Evan Fox, Nicholas Pentabona, and Brian Waldeck, BDA write music that sounds mostly like a raccoon in a trash can. Or an opossum. Or just, like, a regular possum. And it's gotta be an aluminum trash can, not a plastic or rubber one.
In 2013, Nicholas and Evan met at a party for a mutual friend. After sharing some drinks, tobacco cigarettes, and an hour long discussion on the early recordings Steve Albini made, they agreed to band together through thick and thin. Tuning of instruments was not, and is still not, high on the priority list. Waldeck, formerly in several smaller-run projects with Evan, joined immediately on drums, an instrument he'd been teaching himself from ancient yard sale French-jazz LP's.
"Small world! Awful people." comes in 2015 as BDA's first real recording. Timing out at four songs in twenty-three minutes, these jams are packed with guitar-clobberin', drum stick chipped, flat-wound bass string'd distortion burps — heavy on the saturation.
All melodies appearing on this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real songs, popular or not, is purely coincidental.
