Anyone seen this? I heard it has some of the most violent footage ever caught on film.

I missed the premiere. At some point, I'm going to get it when I see them at a show.

i've seen it; i think it's ridiculous. this shit is in part why the scene collapsed in the early 90's. the most violent footage ever caught on film? no way.
is the scene about music or is it about beating people up? if it's the latter, go watch the wwf

it was ok, but didnt live up to the hype for me, was a little too short. theres some pretty funny stuff in there though.

the dvd was pretty good. i got it for $12 and i'd say it's worth it. i thought it would be more violent though. the best scene is the two black kids getting their asses kicked outside the paradise. the ramallah footage, and the surgery was very cool. there is a great old clip of wrecking crew on the bonus footage as well.

i own volume 1, and i saw volume 2 at the big screen premiere. the concept is great, but i have to disagree with the way alot of it was arranged and edited.

i just got it, its good but they show the same clips over and over again.... not really worth it.

I saw it... I weep for the future. There is one kid on there bitching about death metal saying it was all "dungeons and dragons" or something to that effect. Then he went on saying hardcore is so much better cuz it's reality and true. I could not help but notice how high strung and pissed off this dude looked. I thought he was going to start foaming at the mouth... For me personally metal is a form of escapism, too much reality makes life suck. Maybe this poor sap needs to figure that out.
The guy that punched the old dude for trying to break the band up must have felt like a real man for knocking a 68 year old man on the ground. It must have sent his ego soaring through the roof knowing he was that tough...
Who was the kid screaming how "not core" someone was at the end there. Next time scream a little a louder buddy I did'nt think you were getting enough attention from the little kids mesmerized by how "core" you were... Yup scream louder next time and maybe a cop will come and club yer fuckn knee caps in and do the world a favor...
The only crew I ever needed was my buddies Smith and Wesson... Degeneration X sux a black cock...

i thought metal kids were above being in crews, at least thats what so many of you have said.....EVEN THOUGH just about everyone in Suffocation is ThugSquad. Yes, you heard me correctly, members of one of the greatest death metal bands ever are affiliated with a hardcore "crew". I guess now you'll have to decide between not liking Suffocation, or maybe finding something else to complain about beside some hardcore kids you don't even know that have nothing to do with you.

Of course metal is "fake". It's supposed to be. You didn't honestly think that Chris Barnes actually goes out and tortures and kills people did you? You didn't really think Devourment goes out and kills pregnant women. You didn't actually think Bruce Dickenson slays dragons or whatever. You don't really think Cradle of Filth are vampires. For christs sake, Nile isn't even from Egypt....they're from like North Carolina. It's supposed to be fake.

We go in roves of 10-15 and team up on one high school emo kid at a time, in true south shore crew fashion. After the dozen or so of us manage to barely beat the one 15 year old emo kid, we brag about how tough we are on our own message board.

Its funny how Colin says that about death metal but he sells some death metal at his store, and has posters of death metal bands hanging up also.

In my opinion, hardcore and rap are like the same thing, gang mentality, a whole lot of violence...the list of comparisons could go on.

toggletoggle post by ninkaszi187   at Jul 18,2004 7:28pm
haha personally i thought that was pretty funny about the death metal comment. i wonder what made him say that though. isn't the drummer of TYAG in COA as well?

plenty of nyc metal bands have ties to DMS as well. hc and metal can get along, it's not too hard.

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Jul 18,2004 10:33pm
to really understand considerable portions of the video you really need to have been a part of the hardcore scene in boston over the last few years, at least in my opinion. I think alot of people who weren't are being left in the dark about some things. Should it be like that, or is that a production flaw? I'd like to see more people dicussing it as a documentary that it is (or is at least advertised as), rather than a peice of consumption junction footage. I think the video is still having problems breaking away from the girls-gone-wild-ish tendencies of volume I. It tends to rely too heavily on montages of things that look cool, rather than constructing a narrative. Wether you appreciate hardcore or not there's quite an interesting story to be told. The interviews with Nathan, and Baldwin, etc. are excellent, and tell a side of hardcore that most people don't know. It brings the video to the verge of making some really interesting points, but everything in between is just way too thin. Example: As much as I like seeing Dave Suture hit that kid it loses it's significance really fast when I have to keep looking at it without anything to elaborate on it.

I dunno, just my thoughts as a film theory/videography nerd. we'll see what happens in volume 3.

toggletoggle post by tbone_r  at Jul 19,2004 12:00am

the guys in that video say that you won't get beat up as long as you don't do anything to deserve it... but at shows I've seen random people get punched and beaten up. a lot of the crap said is just hypocritical and sounds like they just want a reason to hurt people. gimme a fuckin break, there's no philosophy, reasoning behind any of this.. it's just fucking music.

if I was ever involved in any of this shit, I would be sniping all these guys as they exited clubs with a PSG-1 and a Silencer, not fist fighting. call me a pussy, I call it being smart.

About Colin's death metal comment, I think it's aimed more at black metal type bands like iced earth and opeth that actually have dungeons and dragons type lyrics. Saying he has a drummer from tyag isn't really a valid point because they don't have lyrics that would make you think 'they sit in thier basement and play dungeons and dragons'.
They do make it sound as if no unecessary violence goes down, with exceptions like 'unchecked male aggression' and in Colin's interview he does say 'some people go over the line' but for the most part these people that do that are just pricks. I know a handfull of them and spend the majority of thier time looking for useless fights, even here. The DVD all in all was good. definately worth the money. definately what you'd expect.

toggletoggle post by Jellyfish at Aug 29,2004 4:45pm
Opeth dosent have any lyrics about dungeons and dragons. Moron.

toggletoggle post by Dick_Bloodeye at Aug 29,2004 4:50pm
I would say thier lyrics and writing style are heavily influenced by medival themes and dungeons and dragons type topics. study them. moron.

toggletoggle post by honor4death   at Aug 29,2004 5:27pm
last time i checked iced earth and opeth weren't black metal type bands.. or else they would suck. ass clown

toggletoggle post by Jellyfish at Aug 29,2004 5:32pm
I dont need to study them, I know them. I dont know about Iced Earth, but Opeths lyrics are very nature inspired (under the weeping moon, black rose immortal, night and the silent water etc.) and despair (face of melinda, in my time of need, harvest, weakness etc etc etc) Sorry i called you a moron but you are so wrong.

toggletoggle post by Dick_Bloodeye at Aug 29,2004 5:52pm
you probably know more about them than I do, but the few lines that I do know (i'll use 'walking through the enchanted forest' as an example) dungeons and dragons/ medival themes come to mind. I may be misinterpereting them though.

"making fun of death metal" give me a fucking break like hardcore is cool? Fuck that. Making fun of death metal = you cant handle death metal. Stupid shit hardcore is lame you go to a show worrying about getting beat up and its fucking true. Boston beatdown isnt a documentary its just certain people trying to get more popular by "shocking" The nation with bullshit that ive seen on cops and various fox tv shows. Fuck hardcore and crews are gay as hell. There is nothing "real" about "hardcore"

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Aug 30,2004 8:50pm
yeah, sometimes it feels like you're watching real TV, only at places nearby and people I know in it.... I don't think making broad generalizations about a genre of music can be justified by saying "You weren't part of the scene then, you didn't know how it was"... That's total bullshit. Colin's Death Metal comment was stupid. But he does seem pretty reasonable in the interview with him in the bonus footage (though it seems he's kinda contradicting it in the 2 fights I noticed him in hehe... but I don't know the full circumstances there). I'm not saying crucify the guy for making one ignorant comment in passing... But you can't sit here and complain about people stereotyping Hardcore fans as thugs if you're gonna bash other genres baselessly.

Heh, I guess that's sort of directed at xmikex but indirectly in argument with the overall message of the video, since there is criticism of how FSU were stereotyped as jocks by people in the hardcore scene and losers by society. Even were I not into Metal, I would see bashing of Metal by people in Hardcore as counterproductive to their own arguments, weakening the conviction behind their message with the double standard. I mean, they can't even make a DVD without including one insulting comment about Death Metal haha... And I'm sure Colin's not the only one voicing these feelings even though a lot of these guys and their friends are Metalheads to one degree or another.

Anyway... even if some kid in a cheesy Death Metal band was a dork who sat in his basement playing D&D every weekend, I don't see how that makes him an enemy of the Hardcore scene or something...

I also fail to see how fashioncore kids, as gay and ignorant as they may are ruining the Hardcore scene. Granted they are tarnishing its name to some extent, but that's inevitable in all genres... And when's the last time a venue closed down cause of them?

Anyway, I'm not saying I'm above making fun of shitty music and people with bad style for shits and giggles, but I guess the main point is that it's predictable and unfortunate that there's all this back and forth bashing between different subcultures, cause it distracts from things in the big picture that we should maybe be devoting our energy to instead... making music for starters.
