anyone have a studio they can recommend?
I have a handful of potentials, but I was wondering if anyone had any info on something I havent looked into yet....
The last studio I went into, the guy was well equipped, but had NO fucking clue on how to produce metal.
any help would be abfab. KOK

godcity studios, (kurt ballou from converge) and austin enterprises (steve austin form today is the day) are both in mass. ballou's not insanely expensive, but he's usually booked.

while steve austin's recordings generally do suck, one cannot overlook the almight Screamin' w/the Deadguy Quintet.

kurt at godcity doesn't do a very good job either.
he only does a good job on bands he likes, ie. curl up and die, etc etc.

new alliance is ok. go to machines with magnets in providence.

is machines with magnets the studio that "There Where Wires" recorded at? if so it is the same place murder in the first went once and it was just ok and they fucked around alot. definatley not worth it. the final result sucked and i could do better. but this was a year ago.

ok i just looked at the website machines with magnets are indeed the place there where wires and murder in the first recorded at. hmm 35 bucks an hours to get dicked around in the studio and waste 4 hours just placing mic and getting guitar sounds. leaving the band to only finish 2 tracks in 2 days with a shitty mix to follow after hearing the shitty mix of 2 songs which cost over $400 to produce they went back and almost killed the engineer who then remixed it again for free which took a month and still sounds just ok at best



GOOD ADVICE: find an engineer that likes your band and is willing to do a good job. fuck anyone that charges too much and slops your shit together to just get paid

you can't base you're "good" engineering purely on recordings. The band might have gone in there and booked a day to record and mix 12 songs. of course that's gonna come out not-so great.

but my basis on steve austin is i know people who have had long sessions there and their recording still sucks. Lamb of God for instance. The guitar tone on that cd sucks. Not only that steve doesn't really know micing techniques very well. the dude can mix a sick cd and does fairly well with mastering, but i wouldn't want him tracking my songs that's for sure.

overcompression is what alot of studios to do metal. listen to anything done at Q division that's metal. The latest between the buried and me sounds like ass and is obviously overcompressed.

I like pretty much everything I've heard from New Allience. The Red Chord, Cave In, Isis, etc. They do very well with giving you a clean sound that's raw enough to not sound like shit.

I'm unaware about C2 or machines with magnets in RI.

I have teachers that work over at longview... they have sick equipment. I like that shit my teacher pull off too, so yes it's a good studio.

if money is no object then you could go to that guy chris harris aka zeuss (shadows fall, hatebreed, sworn enemy, god forbid,100 demons) he is in hadley mass. he has a studio there and sometimes does work at longview farms like hatebreeds perseverance cd.
