Any new recipes in the works? I'm at day 5 of a 5gallon Double Bag clone. Little extra malt extract for ABV.

Any new ideas or batches you guys working on?

toggletoggle post by Homebrewing Elitist at Nov 8,2012 1:05pm
hahaha, you guys and your "home" brews. The yeast you guys use is infected and your keg has no pressure.

i'm in the middle of a honey porter. but adding a lb of honey to the 2nd fermentation, while dry hopping a low alpha acid hop

toggletoggle post by Eli_hhcb at Nov 8,2012 2:53pm
Awesome. that sounds tasty. I've gone back to really simple single carbois setup. I Didn't even rack the last batch(transfer) For the Big hoppy ambers I was making. Sediment was so little, plus it's good for you! B12 vitamins.

I bet the roasty porter with honey would be dope!

Starting a pumpkin beer, although its gonna be a pain in the ass and prolly not that good

toggletoggle post by Spydre  at Nov 8,2012 3:59pm
I've got 5 gallons of English Mild and 10 gallons of Pumpkin Ale on tap plus some bottles of Belgian Abbey Double that I've aged for almost a year. I'm going to likely brew a Christmas type beer this weekend. Either something like a Gingerbread Ale or a Nutmeg Porter.

On the mead front, I've got about 7 gallons of mead that's been split into oak aged vanilla mead, holiday metheglin mead, berry mead, cinnamon nutmeg mead, saffron mead, and show meads that are dry and sweet. I'm hoping to brew a Braggot (beer/mead hybrid) or Bochet (burnt mead) sometime in the next few weeks before winter really hits.

I would love to get into kegging. some day...some day. How much roughly $ a real basic setup?

toggletoggle post by Spydre  at Nov 8,2012 4:43pm
Depends what you get. If you're talking about the cheapest possible 2 keg setup then it's not bad.
- Free or cheap mini fridge from CL that can fit 2 5gal kegs and a 5lb CO2 tank
- $100 for 2 used 5gal ball lock corny kegs
- $50? 5lb CO2 tank
- $50 temp controller
- $75 CO2 regulator
- $50-100 in faucet/shank/hose tap hardware
Total: $350-400

It's even cheaper if you can find a used setup on CL. People sell them pretty often, but you'd have to make sure everything works first.

Honestly, if you're planning on sticking with homebrewing, kegging is where it's at. You don't have to deal with all the bullshit associated with sanitizing and filling 50+ bottles (a keg is essentially 1 big bottle) and you can force carb instead of bottle conditioning, which means you can drink your beer sooner and have more control over the carbonation levels. Plus, having beer on tap at all times is nice.

toggletoggle post by Spydre  at Nov 8,2012 4:53pm
Actually, if you're just using a standard fridge, you might be able to skip the temp controller to save the $50, too. I use one, because my kegerator is a converted chest freezer, but you don't technically need one if you use a normal fridge.

toggletoggle post by Eli_Hhcb at Nov 9,2012 12:13am
It's really easy. Like heating up warm watery oatmeal and putting it in a bucket. Wait. Drink. You gon and made something tasty that gets you drunk. Fuck on!

toggletoggle post by geminiII at Nov 9,2012 2:06am

homebrew is way more useful than Burzum

toggletoggle post by ark at Nov 9,2012 9:47am
solid thread, can anybody recommend brewing books with a scientific approach? i don't just want to read a bunch of random websites to get going.

toggletoggle post by Spydre  at Nov 9,2012 9:59am
How to Brew by John Palmer is like the bible for brewing and a great place to start. There are a ton of books for advanced homebrewing, but they're a little more limited in scope in terms of what they cover.

The home brewers Bible by Charlie Papazian. Plus each beer kit comes with full instructions. Full kits with all supplies except ingredients are less than $100

Just in case you're interested in making some parsnip wine.

toggletoggle post by Eli_hhcb at Nov 11,2012 12:03pm
I actually have access to an old still setup. I've been researching and would like to cook up a batch in the next few weeks. will report back.

Anyone here ever distilled?

I have a crap load of basement space that I'm not using... I don't really like beer except for stouts. I love wine and I probably like prison hooch. someone sell me on making some beers.

toggletoggle post by Eli_Hhcb at Nov 12,2012 10:03am
Honestly,.we could talk you through beer making. Very easy. You can choose what style you want to make. First equip costs less than $100 then ingredients are usually 30 to 60$. Do it do it. Next week RTTP all vinyl homebrewing show.

toggletoggle post by Spydre  at Nov 12,2012 10:21am
Making wine is easier than making beer, so if you prefer wine you should probably give that a go. The only downside to making wine is that you typically need to age it for much longer than beer.

pissed, my fermentation went into asexual orgy mode and went up my air release. was only at 65 degrees. no idea why this happened.

toggletoggle post by LucidCurse at Nov 12,2012 9:49pm
Yeah my "blueberry honey beer" I just made is technically a barley wine. I drank 2 and im listening to african abu-babu music, pretty efficient (its at least 8%).

That happens sometimes. It's tough to predict it. The best thing to do is to remove the airlock, clean it, sanitize it, then attach a blowoff hose. Depending on what time of carboy/bucket you're using, you can just connect a hose to the airlock itself similar to this picture then run it to a small container of StarSan (or other sanitizer).
