The mainstream media establishment is attacking heavy metal again, just like they did in the 1980s, and this time they're using suspect "science" to claim heavy metal causes depression and possibly suicide:
A new study conducted by Melbourne University finds that teens exposed to heavy metal music are more susceptible to depression and suicide.
"Young people at risk of depression are more likely to be listening to music, particularly heavy metal music, in a negative way," said Dr. Katrina McFerran. - Guitar World

these stories and headlines are worded as they are to create the impression in the reader that there is causality. if you read the actual stories carefully they NEVER categorically state there is ANY causality; they 'imply' or 'insinuate'. but that's enough to get some people who can't read real well all riled up. like conservationist is trying to do. |

Whatever. Anyone who reads this article (or worse- the flawed study it was based on) and actually invests themselves in the implications (ie, believes that "heavy music" is problematic to society) was probably already predisposed to senseless fears and the free-flow of ignorance before they even laid a finger on the paper/screen/etc. The masses will find the answers they seek, wherever they look, no matter what the "evidence" suggests. The phenomenon is, dare I say, old news. Annoyingly stupid as it is, I'm not worried about the potential repercussions of this article. |
