I was about to say the drum sound in general was really odd and was confused as to how this was a final mix.........then I noticed a keyboard line and realized somehow I still had iTunes running in the background and there was another song playing at the same time.

Now that I've solved that, everything sounds badass.

Haha, didn't know there was a thread for this.

What did you not like about the snare sound? I am curious as I enjoy hearing others opinions from a third party perspective.

I believe I know what you are referring to, as the snare sound in the last section on the track has much more body and reverb to it. This was done on purpose for two reasons.

1. The end of this track is thick and heavy, I'm not really doing anything too technical and felt that it sounded pretty bad ass. Although, it was not my idea, I went with it as I personally thought it gave the end of the song different character.

2. I'm pretty sure I hit the snare mic right before this section kicked in, pushing it away from the center of the snare. In the unmixed version, the snare lost all the thick crack that the rest of the song had, pretty sure it was because I moved it without noticing, thought I had corrected the mics position but oh well. Pretty sure that was why, and this was an acceptable adjustment haha

I suppose if that's what you were referring to, then good to know for the future. If not that part specifically, then I would love to hear your feedback

There first part of the track the snare sounds odd cause its sits further back in the mix than the triggered kick drum or cymbals which are way up front. also without vocals there sounds like there is a mid scoop on the EQ leaving a"void" around the snare making it seem like it's even further back in the mix. Once the vocals come in, (38 seconds) which are heavily reliant on mid frequencies it makes the snare sound much more natural and in place.

Seems like at 2:40 you hit the snare mic but crushed the snare. Sounds like your engineer tried to capture that overcast sound for a second and totally failed on the snare. at 2:50 its stays heavy and overcasty but the snare totally losed its balls but it still has a little more attack, volume and reverb than the snare up till 2:40

overall the track sounds huge. vocals are awesome. just my 2 cents.

i definitely appreciate the feedback josh. Overall this is only my second studio recording to date and im learning new things to listen for everytime when it comes to the mixing stage. food for thought for the future

yeah, the snare is the only thing that bugs me too. I'm not gonna fault you or Felipe for it though, snare is by far the hardest part of the drumkit to get to sound good, especially due to the low headroom preamps that most of us DIY engineers are stuck using. From listening to this and the Scaphism demo I get the impression that your snare is not the easiest to record. It's crushing as shit live and has sounded weak and pingy on recordings. My theory is that using the old standby of a 57 on the top head isn't giving the sound of the drum enough time to develop into the crushing Alex snare that we know and love, and mainly picking up the sound of just the head and not the resonance of the shell. Something I would try in the future is putting a mic on the shell of the snare, 2-4 inches off the drum halfway between the top and the bottom. Metal snares usually react a lot better when miked that way. Also, if you have access to a room with hardwood floors that really helps too, even if it means putting down a sheet of plywood and putting the drums on top the difference is night and day. Hope that helps, or you can disregard it all together haha

This is my second recording ever. We didn't use triggers or drum replacing software.
I mixed most of it with headphones.
Will definitely learn from your feedback, and Reuben, you're right about the snare.
Thanks!

that's a pretty ridiculous kick drum sound if it not triggered. rueben and I did and A/B comparisson with an sm57 on snare through different pre amps and found that the brick kicked the shit out of the other pres. not even close. here's why: an sm 57 is a low inpedance mic. it wants 300 ohms. most mixing boards like my mackie and interfaces like my presonus have impedence of 1200-2000 ohms. d112 wants 1200 ohms and most LDC mic's require 2000-5000. Try using the 57 with a preamp with a lower impedance because the capsule on your sm57 is not moving properly with too much resistence. this would explain why the kick sounds awesome and the snare does not using the same preamp.

read this or google "sm 57 gizmo" and make one. it's way cheaper than buying a new preamp.http://www.recordingmag.com/resources/resourceDetail/330.html
