So I'm thinking of making the plunge and getting a HDTV. Problem is, I know little about them, and I don't know what I should be looking for. Is LCD all the rage these days? What's the diff between 1080i and 1080p? Any particular brand that's worthwhile? Am I looking for trouble if I buy something used?

do not buy it, use your money for something useful. KILL YOUR TV.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 6,2011 3:21pm
I'm in the same boat... I need to replace my 48" 1080i rear projection with a 550-60" LED or plasma.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 6,2011 3:23pm
My problem is that I can't read text in most games on the 48" cause they don't render right. Also it takes up to much room. Also also, I can't see the screen in the daylight.

I don't want 3DTV.

I want a LED 55" 1080p that is 240Hz. Carina got a LCD 55" 1080p 60 or 120hz samsung and it was awesome until it broke after a year and one month.

I AM AN ADULT I CAN DO WHAT I WANT

(except afford expensive things which is why I'm 5-10 years behind every technology)

If Yeti or Slag can find a way without a large TV of me being able to play videogames in the day, I'm all ears. I'm going to be cancelling cable TV too, btw.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Jul 6,2011 4:09pm
I don't have cable, I use it for movies and games. Games are annoying since you can't read any of the text anymore on a SDTV.

The first step towards a new HD TV would be to have someone put a pillow over the face of your old TV. Then fire two shots with a silencer, lift the pillow and close my eyes.

God no. Do not get a 240Hz TV. My dad has one and it makes everything look jittery. Gives me a headache. Movies are just now (or are starting soon) shooting in 60Hz. What's the point of the higher refresh rate?

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Jul 6,2011 9:28pm
For stuff like video games, I think.

I'm pretty sure the problem there is that you still live with your dad.

Didn't say I lived with him, LOLOLOLOLOL Just said he owns a TV that I've looked at. With eyes. That don't live with him.

WHERE WE'RE GOING, YOU WON'T NEED EYES TO SEE

toggletoggle post by ark at Jul 6,2011 11:50pm
Don't need a tv to play pc games. Get plasma if money is no issue but you can't usually tell the difference between LCD and there are beautiful LCDs out there now. My 3 year old sylvania is still kicking and still awesome. Also don't kill yourself on anything over 60hz, no input uses it and your eyes can't tell mug difference.

Now that I've spent a few weeks with my 47" XVT, I have to say that there are a few issues I'm having:
-no dlna and no youtube integration forces me to use my PS3 for a media server. Future sets should have this built in.
-the LED local dimming on the panel gives awesome color/contrast but causes a glowing effect when it's white text on a black background.
-active 3d glasses (not passive which are cheaper and you don't have to recharge them). but fuck 3d, even with games it's not worth investing in (yet)
Definitely not dealbreakers for me, especially at the price I got it for. Glasses were free. Costco has the 55" for $1499.99, so it's worth getting it from there if you can find it in stock in NH.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 31,2011 4:31pm
and costco has the glasses free still?

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Aug 31,2011 4:40pm
free until September 13, 2011 when you buy it online or in-store. $80 shipping if online, so check in-store or Amazon if you don't care about return policies, which costco has a good reputation with.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 31,2011 4:42pm
amazon has free returns.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Aug 31,2011 4:47pm
I hate any online returns, especially on bulky items. much rather deal in-store
