Watain overrated? Yes. Were they always? No. "Rabid Death's Curse" and esp. "Casus Luciferi" are total classics. The only thing on par with them in 2004-5 was Deathspell.

It disgusts me that bands like watain exist. Real black metal bands never have melodic parts, and they dont have so much variation in their riffs. A band changing their style slightly over time? always sell outs.

They are good, they havent sold out yet in my opinion. Their new music is still black metal, it just incorperates more melody, but they dont overdo it and its dark melody anyway.

They are overrated by some magazines that call them 'the best black metal band ever' and underrated in some magazines where they are critisized because their music evolved, and they got somewhat popular.

They did get popular very quickly, and some non-black metal people like them, but those people dont actually change the quality of the music. The music is still good even if hipsters sometimes show up at their concerts. Hipsters are showing up at most non-nazi black metal shows nowadays.

Calling bands of genres you listen to "overrated" is a hipster activity.

If it's good, it's good. If it's tainted by the Nuclear Blast production disease, I don't listen to it because it sounds like balls. If they dress like hipsters and go sans corpse paint but play good music, I'll still listen to it, but I won't watch it live.

Melodic parts aren't in "true" black metal. That's called "melodic black metal. Duh.

Also, magazines say stupid things like that because their readers are stupid. Just because a few bands have a small degree of fame doesn't make underground metal bands any less "underground".

I'm criticizing Watain because their later work is derivative garbage. Around Sworn to the Dark they stopped sounding like what Nifelheim might have been if they hadn't gone stagnant. Instead Watain turned into a Dissection tribute band.

I've seen them 3 times and their is definately a great dark energy there but Morbid Angel still mops the floor with them and their pig blood any day
