TL;DR - IMHO Everyone in the world is out to get Wikileaks because of this shitty nation.

Wikileaks is distributed across the Internet and a global human support network on the basis of free speech. It's also on thousands and thousands of personal storage devices.

Governments will make laws to block access to the Internet, and will sanction servers that host Wikileaks. However, since no entity owns the Internet, and it is redundantly distributed, it will have little effect. The Swedish government did the same thing to The Pirate Bay, and it had absolutely ZERO effect.

3) Already the information Wikileaks has dispersed is mirrored in so many places that there is absolutely no single government body that is powerful enough or organized enough that can do a damn thing about it. CASE IN POINT: IF you liken the Wikileaks network to an Islamic terrorist network (on the basis that they're both NETWORKS)...how well has the crusade against them gone?

If Julian Assange is killed or arrested, that won't do anything. He's just the public face of the network.

"Free speech" is a term not many people understand. They will, if the US starts blocking websites.

Governments need to operate on a certain level of secrecy to run smoothly. I'd also like to point out that the freedom of speech is a right granted by the Constitution to American citizens, not people from other countries completely undermining the security of confidential communications. If you ran a business and some employee was leaking information to a third party with the intention of airing all your shit (intellectual property, financial information, etc.) on the World Wide Web, you'd be none too pleased about it, I imagine.

i would agree wholeheartedly with this if our Government wasnt hiding so much corruption that is directly affecting its citenzens in a such negative way with incredibly high consequences. the US seems to be starting a War against its own people - retaliation is necessary.

they don't leak IP, they expose unethical behavior. even governments don't get a pass on ethics. US hiding civilian death tolls in it's wars? People need to know.

i agree that governments need to operate with secrecy in matters of diplomacy and with legitimate enemy intel. except the US (and many other first and third-world nations) operate way outside it's bounds in that regard.

freedom of speech is a human right, not granted by any constitution. this is a universal truth.

It seems my research skills have waned since my college days. I would also be inclined to agree with you if I could find material that discussed the corruption directly affecting us. I'm finding a lot of articles regarding leaks exposing corruption within Afghanistan's government and Russia. While I'm aware the US government is no stranger to corruption, I'd like to see what the leaks have exposed regarding the corruption that directly effects us in such a negative way.

I wasn't implying that WikiLeaks publishes information about intellectual property. I was using that as an example as intellectual property is a businesses most valuable and sensitive information.

As said in my previous post, I'd be very much inclined to agree that the US operates outside the boundaries of what should be secret and what should be public if I read something implying so.

I believe very strongly in free speech. I also believe in the concept that freedom of speech is not the right to yell fire in a crowded theater.

any corruption in our armed forces in regards to Afghanistan; effects Americans directly because it will ultimately drag out the war longer. It undermines the American strategy, and will lose the confidence of non-extremist Pashtuns. Thus security in the region will be unattainable. Bad for everyone.

toggletoggle post by burnsy at Dec 7,2010 12:00pm
All I found were articles alleging that the leaks expose corruption within Afgahnistan's government. I read nothing about our armed forces. And I don't think your logic that it would drag the war out longer is accurate. Maybe it wouldn't... maybe it wouldn't... Unfortunately it seems our troops are stuck there for a while not matter how you slice it.

What exactly is our strategy anyways haha?

It took me one google search to find troops doing something stupid in Afghanistan, uncovered by wiki leaks.

Last I checked the strategy was to gain local support by non-fundamentalists. It hard to gain support from someone when you kill their family for no reason.(hypothetical) This seems pretty logical to me why do you need a source that would just be speculation anyways? want my credentials

It is also interesting to point out that Sweden dropped the rape allegations last September...

This man's ability to leak so much, so quickly and so efficiently is pissing a lot of very, very, very powerful people off. With all the groups springing to the support of WikiLeaks, and all the groups trying their hardest to eradicate it from the net, what we have here is the biggest digital battle ever fought over net neutrality. I'm willing to bet there are more simultaneous denial of service attacks going on than ever before. Shit is going to hit the proverbial fan on this.

My search wasn't for troops doing something stupid in Afghanistan.

Why do I need a source? Because I made a point to which Fuckismysignature made a counter point. Being the open-minded person that I am, I like to see sources so that I can evolve my opinions. Don't need your credentials.

My comment about how I didn't agree with your logic was rooted in the fact that you said corruption on the part of the troops would extend the war, not that gaining support from locals when you're killing their families was difficult. Corruption can entail a lot of things. But I can agree with you that if the strategy is to gain support from non-fundamentalist locals, killing their families will undoubtedly slow down the process.

It is obvious that these major corporations are cutting ties because they're feeling extreme pressure from either the government itself, or they're doing it our of fear of being linked to it.. if the shit hits the fan even more.

One must remember that this country is now owned by corporations. Congress is corrupt and most congressmen just sponsor bills because it means more money for them and their district. We've lost all sense of what being American is about.

It should be noted by now that America is indeed on its last leg. History usually repeats itself. We are internally destroying ourself, just like the Romans. We are overstepping our bounds and have too much say in sovereign countries - just like the Romans. Our Hegemonic ideas have exhausted our resources, and our lack of attention to reshaping politics and looking beyond the false paradigm of the two party system will lead this country down.
If anything, we'll possibly split the country up into different areas in the next 20-30 years or so, after WWIII, that is.

F-ing typical. Wikileaks exposes the secret machinations of the US gov - and the US gov targets wikileaks.
So much for all their gov crap about *freedom of speech*.
The US gov goes a *honey trap* against Assange and gets him arrested and denied bail - and then they get IP providers to deny wikileaks US websites.
Then they put pressure to get Mastercard and paypal to kick wikileaks into touch, then put pressure on the Swiss gov to freeze Assange's bank accounts.
Big Brother Lives - in the US.
Then Palin and her ilk says Assange has *blood on his hands* to divert attention form all the blood the US gov has on it's hands.
And yet the Press don't complain about all this tyranny...
Wikileaks is just making public what the US and other govs does in secret. Showing them for the utter hypocrites such govs are.
So much for humankind - they don;t deserve to survive.

Why has the US government not been held accountable for all the blood on it's hands?
Why have other Western governments meekly done the bidding of the US government by getting Assange arrested and his bank accounts frozen?
Why isn't the so called free Western press calling the US government to account for its murderous policies in Iraq and Afghanistan and why are they not calling for the immediate release of Assange?
By getting Assange arrested and defaming him they have cleverly shifted the focus away from their culpability, their crimes against humanity.
And the suckers just fall in line with the tyrants and call for the blood of Assange :(

This is my political wet-dream

Historically it is much more difficult to rule a large landmass than a small landmass

look at the examples: Rome, Ancient Persia, Alexander the Great's empire, Russia, China, India, U.S.A., and Britian.

All have had long and bumpy histories both within and without their borders.

Areas like Iceland, Norway, many small European republics, Sweden, and other countries have had relatively easier histories except for where the big guys above fucked with them.

The thing is Jefferson knew he committed a grave crime when he bought the Louisiana purchase. He is said to have regretted it the rest of his life for not only was it against the constitution but he knew it would bring us into many conflicts both with the remaining European empires in the western hemisphere and the natives who were already pushed out there to make room for the seaboard colonies.

I say we break the union before it comes to a civil war round 2. I don't give a fuck about this divided we fall crap, that's just starry-eyed propaganda meant to make sure it's easier for us to be raped by politicians and corporations as a whole.

plus, who wants to be in a union with states like kansas, alabama, georgia, tennesse, mississippi?

I got word from a friend that some Anons had created an improved version of LOIC - the HOIC - and initial low-volume tests took down a UK webhost in 10 minutes. Shits getting fucked.

And by low volume I mean ONLY 2 people. It can also bombard multiple targets simultaneously.

I support free speech and I'm glad that things are being exposed. Too much corruptness in our legislature. Maybe now we might see a revolution.

i agree that governments need to operate with secrecy
No they don't. It's just become accepted and expected 'cos it's the easy option.
Imagine if they were honest and not two faced.
Secrecy is just an excuse used to avoid personal responsibility and accountability and to be devious.
What a crappy world where deception and lying and dishonesty and avoiding responsibility are accepted at the very highest level.
The government should set an example - not act a deceiving partner in an unequal relationship.

Come back to reality. This isn't Thomas More's Utopia.

Corruption is an inherit trait in humans. We are digging our own grave.

toggletoggle post by Slag at Dec 10,2010 3:45pm
I agree. It doesn't have to be inherit. People need to realize that the only way to succeed as a species is to work together. To screw over your fellow man does nothing but further the gap.

toggletoggle post by Burnsy at Dec 10,2010 4:14pm
All as one? No thanks. I don't even think working together will make the human race succeed in any poignant way. Then again I'm not sure how to define success.

Also, I don't think corruption is inherent in humans. It's easy to elicit when you dangle the prize in front of people's faces though.

toggletoggle post by ark at Dec 10,2010 4:39pm
the worst traits in humans will always manifest themselves somehow. but, free speech is worth fighting for, and governments should be afraid of their people. nothing will ever be perfect, but as long as the balance is there and those ideas are close to reality, that is the best you could hope for. an ideal "star trek" future is probably unattainable but things could very damn well be better than they are.

Free speech is absolutely worth defending. I wasn't knocking the idea of fighting for free speech. I was speaking specifically to the notion of working together as a species toward success. Not gonna happen. It goes back to the concept that it's damn near impossible to get 100% of a population to agree that grass is green.

huh? this is news to me.

The only possible way for humans to work together is if there's an extraterrestrial threat that is set on destroying our species.
That being said, when the Spanish came to the new world, most tribes didn't unite because they were being used and manipulated.
