so ive been looking around online for companies that make custom sized drum cases. i need a hard shell case to fit my snare, but most companies dont make cases with a 7" depth.

anyone out there have this problem? do you know of some good companies which provide this service?

ive found some online but they seem to be asking a lot of $$ for this type of thing. a 14"x7" case from one company quoted me at fucking $225 which i find to be a lot, i guess its quality tho.

I've been trying to find an in-stock case for both my 12x5" snare and my 8x8" tom, but every place I try puts me on the back-order list. Kinda sucks, I've been trying for at least two years.

Since you just need one for your snare, weight isn't an issue, build a fitted wooden case. Been saying I'd do mine forever, my snare is 13"x6". But I also carry my cymbals in a pizza delivery bag, so whatever.

i was considering this, but i have no experience building one haha. ive found cheap cases online that say they fit 4"-8" depths but they arent the best quality for protection. this will be for the snare on my new kit, so i havent gotten it yet but i just wanna make sure i can keep it protected from the start.

i really wish SKB would just grow a pair and make a hard shell case past 6.5" depth since thats sorta what i was hoping for, but no one makes it in stock size

Gator cases are the ones i was telling you about. These come in snare sizes up to 8.5. They are about $110, and i've seen them, they're really nice.

http://www.xlspec.com/casemaker_choose.asp

They also come in all sorts of awesome colors. When i was playing with ouch, i was gonna get two yellow cases, and two green cases to match our logo. This company is awesome for customization.

black, blue, red, yellow, orange, green, purple, grey granite, red granite, purple granite.

ooooo red granite sounds sexy

nice, thanks jimbo. i will check this out, been meaning to ask what company it was that you were mentioning. im leaning towards the classic series, are they similar to SKB style on the inside for padding?

7" deep? That's it? That will fit EASILY in a 6.5x14 SKB case. I know because I used to put an 8x14 in the same case.

Just to add, every SKB drum case is about 1 1/2" - 2" oversized in depth.

I'm not sure about this. I have a 6.5 deep and it doesn't fit bigger drums.

It must not be the case I am talking about.

i originally thought about doing this, but i asked someone who has a 6.5 and was told it wouldnt fit a 7" shell depth

They're stupid. 8.75" interior depth. Your snare will be able 7 1/2" deep when you include the hoops. Unless the hoops on your snare somehow protrude more than 1.75" from the shell, it will fit.

and just so you know, those cases i put up the link to are cheaper than SKBs, and in consumer reports they're given high ratings. My snare is in an skb case, and it does NOT move around when i tip it back and fourth. There isn't any play inside it, i tested it last night. BUT maybe i'm just "stupid".

so you think those gator cases are better?

i'm still sorta leaning towards the gator case ive just never seen one, not sure how it holds up against the SKB case. i like SKB, using it for all my other drums, but even tho the interior depth is big enough for the snare i dunno yet if i should go with the SKB shell for the snare.

The lining inside the cases makes it hard for the drum to move around too much and doesn't determine whether a drum with a different depth would or would not fit. An actual way to measure that would be to TAKE A RULER and measure from the top hoop to the top of the case. If there is extra space, a deeper drum WILL FIT. If there isn't, then you don't have the case you think you have. I use a 4x14 SKB for my 5x14 snare, BTW. And a 12x14 SKB for my 14x14 floor tom. And an 8x12 SKB for my 9x12 rack tom.

I appreciate the persistence of your opinion. It's funny, i never thought to actually check where the drum sits in the case. (sm: just a bit)

i dont doubt that it will fit, once you pointed out the interior depth i know it will be no prob, i might just go with SKB cuz i know they guarantee them
