Got to see Sonny Rollins last night at Symphony Hall, six rows from the stage - definitely one of the coolest shows I've ever been to! Got tickets to see Brubeck there in June as well! Any other jazz fans around here?

I liked Fusion when I played guitar (and other instruments), but now for the most part it just bores me. Incredible musicians but does nothing for me now.

YES.

They were last time I checked not too long ago. And reasonable too, considering. Go to BSO.org and he is going to be playing with the Pops on June 1st and 2nd if memory serves. I wish he was just playing with his own band but I figure being picky about seeing someone who's almost 90 years old wouldn't be my wisest choice if I really want to see him. It's listed as "An Evening With Dave Brubeck" too so it should be amazing regardless.

Take Five remains one of my favorite songs of all time.

toggletoggle post by LPCustom at Apr 20,2010 1:58pm
I've been picking through his discography kind of randomly and only found it on Amazon - but you should really invest in "Time Further Out" - just as good if not (dare I say) maybe a little better than Time Out. Really worth your time (no pun intended).

Time In Outer Space is top notch as well. I think Time Further Out is tops for me, as well.

Seen him a few times from working at the Newport Jazz festival for a few years and then returning as a paying customer last year.

He's lost a step with age, but still puts them a step above most.

Joe Morello is a better drummer than 99% drummers out there...and he's blind as a bat!

That's what makes looking through some jazz artists so crazy. I probably have like 35-40 Miles Davis albums and you're not even making a dent, haha. And at that they're all still top notch. These types of guys were true musicians in every sense of the word!

wrong.
if kenny g got ahold of the bass that manring uses to play his music, then he could make the same music. manring is a bag of cool technique, shaken, and dumped out on your cosby sweater wearing commercial jazz table top. fuck that shit. a very cool player, but a player who wouldn't exist if jaco hadn't done everything michael manring did 20 years earlier. jaco is even credited with inventing the instrument known as fretless electric bass which manring is famous for playing. the electric bass would have stopped evolving at stanley clark and larry graham with out jaco. call that a "+1" if you really hate jaco, but you'd have no bunny brunel, victor wooten, les claypool, or michael "white man jazz perm" manring without jaco pastorius.

very true about joe morello. unfortunately, he was supposed to be a big part of a vintage drum festival in CT that i was gonna go to last weekend... but he is having too much back trouble to play or travel. too bad. i'm slowly going crossing off my bucket list of great musicians to see before i die... he's definitely on there.

For some sweet-ass contemporary stuff, you must seek: Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet, MMW(if you don't know then die), and my favorite living guitarist, Bill Frisell.

Anybody into Coltrane's insane stuff? Ascension/Interstellar Space? Any Coltrane is great but I've been digging his later stuff a lot lately.

Also - anybody have a rec. for a Charlie Parker starting place/album. I feel ashamed for not having any of his stuff yet but never know if he has that "defining" album or albums that a lot of other guys have...?
