We are looking for a (preferably) experienced drummer who can actually play metal. People have replied to our previous ads, and when we audition them, even after hearing our material, are expected not to blast or do fast double bass work, or they can't do it. Have a listen to us here

http://www.myspace.com/convulsiaband

We don't really have a defined sound yet, as one of our songs is more deathcore-ish, another is traditional death metal, and the other is kind of a mix of both. We practice in Providence, RI.

Requirements are simple:
-Must have transportation
-Must know how to play your instrument
-At least 17

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 10,2010 10:13am
If you're having trouble with people coming down that aren't up to spec, you should add some tempo specifics to your requirements. Like
-must be able to blast and play DB 16th at 220.
(obviously i have no idea how fast you guys play, but you guys can clock yourselves with a metranome pretty easily. and any death metal drummer worth his weight in buffalo nickles knows how fast he plays.)

Hmm, good idea! Thanks alot. Sick band btw

-Must be able to blast at LEAST 8ths at 135 BPM
-Double bass must be able to reach at least 16ths at 170 BPM, faster would be amazing though.

so your looking for a drummer who can play 880 single stokes on the kick in a minute.

#10 on the worlds fastest drummer list has 909 single stroke kicks (double bass) and the fastest female drummer only clocks in at 799 stokes.

yeah, those numbers are remarkably high. When you have the metronome on 120, and you're doing 8 notes per beat, you're actually talking about 8th notes. Now, most people would call that playing at 240, as the standard for talking about DB speed is quarter notes. Keep in mind that 240 is REAL fast.

As for the blasts, I assume you mean quarter notes at 135. Which most people would actually call playing blasts at 270. Which again, is really fucking fast.

So as long as you want to be Origin, those numbers work.

Unrealisitc blasts are simple on a drum machine. Just sayin'.

I know you drummer boys hate fake drums anyways. I was always indifferent. There are some horrible fake drumming releases, none more worse than infernecrons first demo, which I took pride in making horrible drums.

stuff about math

i did the exact same math in my head and laughed at this dudes request.

i thought it would be easier to explain how fast it was by comparing it to the worlds fastest drummers.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 10,2010 1:19pm
I get it, and thought i would show him how to properly figure out the numbers he should use... as opposed to showing him what he said sounded stupid. But they both worked.

Most musicians, drummers included, assume that click=quarter. Therefore 8 notes per click is 32nd notes, exactly as he specified.

Meanwhile Jim's right, these are remarkably fast for a drummer.

Just the competent ones.

All drummers that know how to play drums, yeah. Sort of unavoidable.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 10,2010 1:23pm
All music is math. A power chord isn't a fifth because of what the guitarist is drinking, right?

NOT just drummers do this sir, anyone who is schooled in music know that math is a big part of it. Not all of it, but definitely a part.

16th notes at 115-125 bpm i dont think any of this actually gets up to 135 bpm.

I'd have to argue with you there.
Most music is math, indeed. But I wouldn't say drone/ambience/etc is math. Then again, is that music?

Music to me is a combination of math and heart. Bands that lack one or the other always fail.

Math is real. Even in your ambient music. Contrast, timing, interval, and even pitch are measurable, can be recreated, and are therefore based firmly in MATH.

HEART is a purely subjective, undefinable, bullshit word used by people that either lack mathematical talent or refuse to acknowledge it's existence in fear that labeling and quantifying anything will take away it's hoodoo joojoo magic.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 1:38pm
True. Music is math, if you're talking about specifics. But It does not need to be taken into consideration when making all kinds of music.
Music comes from within. I know we could discuss it (as we have in the past), but there's more to music than just math. It plays a major part, but isn't everything.

In metal specifically, they fail more often than not especially when the song goes superhuman speeds... but when they work, they add to the music (Walknut - Graveforests and Anaal Nathrakh stuff have flawless fake drums)

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 1:46pm
I grew to not care about them in black metal because of all the demo bands that use them.
Obviously real drums are better

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Mar 10,2010 1:48pm
bullshit!

Mathematics is artistic in itself. Music is a form of art that makes use of math. Or, sometimes it doesn't use math. That's essentially all you can say about it.

Everything in existance is fractal.

yes, Human Composition uses mathematical values, but if one band is better than the other, that doesn't mean the song writer is better at math.
Composition and creativity always reign.

lol @ meshuggah

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 1:55pm
The point I'm making is math is music and music is math, but what really matters is composition; as with any art. We have the ability to create anything, given the boundaries.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 1:58pm
Maybe I should stop talking before I male a greater fool out of myself for not explaining my point clearly.
Dman you arrowhead! Always right.

toggletoggle post by josh_hates_you  at Mar 10,2010 1:59pm
math is science. not art.

the mona lisa was painted by an artist. it was not colored by numbers.

the science of math can be used to recreate this art.

creating music is art. understanding it is math.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 2:02pm

Because music is art, does that mean it's 200 bucks?

Right. A mathematician would say that numbers are everywhere and he'd be right, down to the frequency of the sounds produced. "Heart" is only recognizable by us and doesn't exist outside of the mind.

If we're talking about math used in composition, who cares. Some use it, some don't.

toggletoggle post by josh_hates_you  at Mar 10,2010 2:03pm
creating logos is art.

if you pay $200 for a logo you are bad at math.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 2:04pm
Hahaha

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Mar 10,2010 2:08pm
Ark & arrow

then we agree. Like I said, everything in the universe is mathematical.
Music is the audible representation of math.
But composition is beyond math.
Maybe I'm just a retard because I view and hear colors when I listen to music.

Woah this definitely spun out of control. Yeah, I meant to say half of that speed, I just glanced at guitar pro and realized it in class today, I knew itd come back to haunt me. And yes, the drums are programmed, because we need a drummer :( Im trying to stray away from the -core though, so if a drummer here can help me that'd be great.

sure your not looking for a funk drummer or jazz drummer for your metal band?
why do metal kids put the word metal in front of everything they do to justify that they can do it.

"metal dude about to eat a metal burrito while listening to metal"
