after the direction Dino tried taking them with Digimortal, i have zero faith in his work, regardless of the brilliance of the albums preceeding it. plus i know more about the story of why they are playing with this line up, and basically its because Burton and Dino are cocks and everyone hates them.

Hoglan > Raymond.
The guy is off playing nu metal now, he got replaced by a sufficient drummer.

Burton needs to go back to his acting days.

Burton and Dino are FF. Raymond too, but Christian was always the expendable one. I don't expect this to reach the heights of Demanufacture, but it doesn't sound half bad. Definitely need to hear the album to make any sort of judgement.
I'd rather have this line up than Christian playing Dino's riffs.
while i agree that Gene Hoglan is a way more diverse player, FF isn't about drum diversity. its about thunderous double bass power, which Raymond excelled at.
Christian kicked major ass on Archetype. Transgressions was horrible, but it did have its moments, and its mainly because Burton's vocals sucked on it.
Personally I LOVE "Obsolete", I still think of it as one of my personal favorite albums. Everything after "Digimortal" I felt was just meh.

this sounds pretty cool. archetype raped. transgression had like 3 good songs, but wasnt HORRIBLE. the recording was terrible. it was so bad that christian apparently stormed out of the studio at one point because of how unhappy he was with the engineering.

Obsolete rules. Digimortal was atrocious, but Archetype was awesome. the only thing about Archetype that i hate is the lyrics to track 2, they are some of the worst shit i've ever heard. but the music itself is awesome.
Love these guys. If Raymond is doing gay shit then fuck him, they don't need him. Hoglan is a drum god. Fact. This tune is good but the lyrics and vocals kinda suck. It's probably the worst tune on the record.
Why isn't gene sporting his sun glasses in that photo?

Random facts about Fear Factory:
Demanufacture was in the Mortal Kombat movie's soundtrack.
It was also in the opening movie track to the infamous PC Game Hit "Carmegeddon". Zero Signal ftw
I actually think it sounds pretty good, but I don't really need any more new FF. Obsolete and Demanufacture are enough for me. A select few tracks off their newer albums are good too.

I don't like anything after "Demanufacture" and I am totally digging this.
I've always thought that Fear Factory and Kataklysm have the best guitar sound i've ever heard. Wish i had the money to build me a rig that would get me anywhere close to this sound.
Demanufacture. Soul of A New Machine is awesome, it's borderline death metal, but it's unfocused, and not all of the tracks are solid.

Agree with Yeti. Although, SOANM has "Scumgrief", "Scapegoat" and "Bid God/Raped Soul" on it and those are some of the best songs they ever wrote. I hate his vocals on the album though. Sounds like a mix of Barney Greenway and Weird Al.
"Fear is the Mindkiller" is prob. my personal fav. Love the Front Line Assembly/Fear Factory thing. Wish they remixed the whole record.

I actually like most of Soul of a New Machine. Crash Test makes me want to drive at 88 mph into a nursing home. lyrics are gay, vocals sound really lame... but its pretty good shit.
Demanufacture is an obvious choice. Archetype is sick. Obsolete is pretty cool. has anyone actually gone back and listened to Digimortal? it isnt the worst thing ever, but its more listenable now then when it first came out.

I never understood "Obsolete". I thought it was such a let down when it came out and recently gave it another chance. I really can't get into it and the riffs just cheese me out. Everything after that is even worse and you honestly can't do FF without Dino. He is FF's riffs. Raymond is expendable as this new track proves. It really is awesome.
"remember:Brutalized Frozen Crusher"
Nice FF title right there.

The best part of Obsolete is the ending.
I always hated Edgecrusher.

Don't understand the disliking for the clean vocals on Soul of a New Machine. Bell's vocal style was pioneering and it added an element of gloom to an otherwise pretty abrasive death/grind record. I don't have a problem with the lyrics to Crash Test. At the time, I thought it took some balls for a death metal band to promote an animal rights message.
Demanufacture is where they came into their own and established the definitive Fear Factory sound. No need to elaborate any further.
I thought Obsolete was amazing when it first came out. I couldn't really listen to Edgecrusher now, but songs like Securiton and Resurrection are some of the best songs they've ever written. Musically, it's what you'd expect, coupled with an interesting dystopian/terminator album concept.
Digimortal was garbage. Laughable, nu metal guiatr tone, no aggression, and a song with cypress hill. Yeah, don't need really need to go any further on that one. It's too bad because they kept up with the man vs. machine, transhumanist concept, but the music just wasn't there to back it up.

I also wish they were more influenced from the Fear is the Mindkiller remix and just ran with it. (real)Industrial/electronic music with Death/Grind riffs and vocals is an innovative idea. If anyone could have performed it successfully, it would have been FF.
post by c.DeAD at Nov 10,2009 11:44am
I agree with the gruff/clean vocal thing being pretty cool, but pioneering? Godflesh did that way before and Acid Bath was around the same time. Plus it's FF, they always did their own thing and no one else will ever be able to emulate that.

Totally. It's like Front Line Assembly death/grind.
post by MikeOv at Nov 10,2009 11:47am
In regards to the vocals, I'm saying that no one was doing that in death/grind at the time...

Oh wait, I thought you guys were saying that they actually managed to make an album that sounds like that.
post by MikeOv at Nov 10,2009 11:53am
Yeah, both did.
post by MikeOv at Nov 10,2009 11:55am
I even like certain songs off of Remanufacture. A Therapy for Pain and Pisschrist remixes were like dark ambient/IDM.

Shit, I always said they should have done that whole record. Just get the first two and this EP. It's all I can currently recommend.
Well, it's got that feeling that I didn't get from anything post "Demanufacture" like production and good songwriting. Really can't wait to hear the whole thing.
I'm on the fence. It's better than what I heard off of Transgressions, but it's below Archetype(which was better than Digimortal but not up to par with Obsolete). Basically this is no Demanufacture.
I realize now that I have no real opinion towards this song.

Always question Ross' authority. Jay controls his own destiny.
Pffffff, good music in my diet is debatable, but I know for a fact I am AIDS free and intend to stay that way. Or at least until you or Slar infect me in my sleep.
This sounds pretty sick aside from the vocals, I always thought it sounded so pummeling the way they accent all the palm muted notes with the Raymond Robo-kicks.

You're still gay. All of you. 100% gay. Like taking in on the face gay.
I don't know how I feel about this track. Don't think I like it. But, I still want to hear the rest of the album. I was excited to hear about the new lineup as they were a favorite when I was in high school. Obsolete is their best album, btw!
