I watch to play movies upstairs. Not like I'm really going to get any of them right now, but which would you think is the best? Right now, I'm watching recorded shows on my PS3 and hulu with playon.
benefits: PS3 = blueray (not that I have ever watched a bdr), will work with everything I already own, know how to use it.
360 elite = more games
HTPC = low power, but highly upgradable.

Im probably just going to put spare parts together into a PC, but I'm curious what you would do.

PS3 slim

360 Elite: has the most games, the most good games, and the most access to other media. Aside from a media server that is.

If you buy a 360 buy a protection plan because the thing will shit out in a year and a half's time then you would have to send it in to be repaired and it might cost you money depending what kind of flaw the system has. Yeah it has better games but it's still DVD so I like the idea you can watch Blueray movies on a PS3.

if you already have a ps3 buy a 360 or trade in your ps3 to get a slim anyway.

if there's any way to integrate a media server into your current system, which by media server i just mean a bunch of hard drive space to put videos on and a networked PC, do it. with the strength of today's hardware there's no more excuse to have a bunch of computers lying around. my desktop handles all of that, i have it output to my tv and the audio split out to my stereo reciever. i've been doing this for years, just playing stuff right on my computer straight to tv.

if you don't have the space/config to do this, i know the 360 can stream video over the network, i'm not sure if the PS3 can. but this is a closed-format solution, i think the 360 only wants to stream Windows Media format crap.

or, get an old XBOX, mod it, and use xbox media center to stream every format in existence

OR put together another PC with a blu-ray drive on it and sit that right next to the tv, networked so you don't need to spread out your data and can centralize it on your main machine.

us heavy stoners that work in IT have this shit down to a science.

glad i got the protection plan, i've had to use it twice in 3 years.

but if they try to sell you a protection plan for a screwdriver, don't do it.

See I made the mistake of not buying a protection plan for it now my 360 does not work at all right now. It's making a fine paper weight. I smartened up and bought a protection plan for the PS3 Slim.

Ya but the PS3 doesn't have the reliability problems the XBox has. That might have been a waste of money.

Is your xbox red-ringed or does it have another problem? If its red-ring then Microsoft will pay for the repair/replacement as well as shipping both ways. Give them a call.

That is the worst advice I have ever read. Good luck playing PS2 games on a slim.

heres tje deal, I already have 2 media servers (one with 9TB in it), but that's not what I need. I need something to play videos from the server onto a TV.

does your TV have PC input (vga)? then i'd just put a networked PC there. with wireless kb/mouse, never have to move, ever.

Naa it freezes every single time I turn it on without fail. I wish I had the red rings so I can get it fixed but for my error it'll cost me $99.99 when I paid like $500.00 for it brand new over a year ago.

OMGNOMNOMNOMNOM like that's not the system I have or anything. Also, the 20GB plays them too I thought.

No, I figured you had the 60G because you got a PS3 pretty early on. I was just saying.

360 makes more sense because you already have a PS3. But I'd still rather have 2 PS3s than a 360, haha. Mainly because most highly rated 360 titles don't interest me, at all.

old news, the new ps3's have backward compatibility i believe.

Hey! I resemble that remark.

Also: Steve I'm pretty sure that you can just lie to XBOX and tell them you red ringed and they'll send you and new one and not even check the old one when you send it back.

Man, I wish mine did. It's a pain in the ass to pull my PS2 out and hook it up and blah blah blah fuck Sony.
