toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 1,2009 3:33pm
everybody's got it. I wouldn't be surprised if I had it. if I do, it's awesome. makes you just that more insane.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 1,2009 3:44pm
I have had medical professionals pin this name on my personality.

I would be even less surprised if you had it, Jimbo. I'm only familiar with it because it's what my family has known as "the Smith man thing" where every male member of my dad's family is kind of a space alien and ends up living in a cabin or a trailer away from people somewhere by the time they hit 70 or so. It's creepy how much the asperger's diagnosis (when my brother was finally diagnosed with it a few years back) fit our family weirdness to a T.

Of course it's the pop diagnosis of the now, so school psychologists are always looking to slap it onto plain ol' ADD or any number of other things.

EDIT: LOL, I was responding to Aril. I'm guessing it's pretty fucking common in the metal scene - it's the thing that makes you not get people and think too logically about stuff.

I'll get positive psychology on your ass.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 1,2009 3:49pm
I didn't even know I had it until like, four and a half years ago. Apparently all the doctors I was brought to as a kid said I was normal, but the doctor I went to around the time I turned 18 said I was really mild now and had it far worse as a kid. Obviously the name is a-boomin'.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 1,2009 3:55pm
My cousins got it. He was able to read Moby Dick right around the time he turned 4. He was a pure genius back then, now he's a pseudo-thug. not sure wtf happened.

There's a range of high-functioning to low-functioning even within Asperger's (which is pretty much just a specific kind of autism that hovers around the high-functioning end of the autistic spectrum), and a lot of the pain in the ass things about it can be alleviated by different therapies, rote learning, and ass-busting on the part of the person affected. I was a complete fucking Martian child when I was little - I had a completely unintelligible speech pattern (mainly in that I couldn't make my brain slow the words down to talking speed to they came out at Micromachine Man speed all on top of each other), I was super literal (which teachers interpret as being a smart-ass) (not like I wasn't anyway), and I completely didn't get facial cues or body language. Speech therapy, rote memorization of facial cues as a front-brain function, just plain time and growing up, I pretty much can deal with people on something like their own level, now. I wouldn't trade my neurology for the crap all you monkeys walk around with in your heads, though, no way. LOL

Well, if that's the case, then everybody that has it knows what's going down and can think for themselves. Nothing wrong with being a free-thinker. In fact, I bet you more artists and musicians have this than say, stock-brokers. but they make the money, we make the art.

There's a thin line between asperger's, insanity, and being a genius.

To this day, you still can't tell when I'm joking or serious. haha

You're pretty right on, the shit part is that a lot of folks can't ever make that break where they start to understand people as a forebrain function (tiring as it is, it's often worth doing) and so completely withdraw or become misanthropic to the point of being a sociopath. As much as people are fucked up and stupid, they still run shit so at least getting half a grasp on what's going on in the sneaky little fuckers' heads is a survival skill. *shrug* Eh, I do ok.

I often find most peoples conversation boring and tune out, I have problems making eye contact. I must have the spergs.

toggletoggle post by MikeOfDecrepitude at Sep 1,2009 4:30pm
Isn't not making eye contact with people a self esteem issue though?

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 1,2009 4:38pm
A lot of people's conversations are extremely boring, especially people I normally don't associate with...at work, parties, other gatherings, people talk about the most mundane shit imaginable. Misanthropy? Maybe. Stupid people with lesser values? Definitely. In situations where I have to make conversation, like at work, or if I'm just trying to have fun at a strange party, it can be really difficult to labor through the weather or mundane/meaningless news stories or pointless issues...forget about trying to start a real conversation (read: exchange of useful ideas) with many people.

Next time you strain from saying something on your mind, or something you really mean, just say fuck it and go for it.

Aw fuck... nillas, being antisocial can easily be mistaken for Asperberger's. If you like truth more than you like giving other people the warm fuzzies:

(a) You don't necessarily have Asperberger's
(b) You're not a liberal

haha

toggletoggle post by crickets at Sep 1,2009 5:33pm
Liberal douchery can easily be mistaken for:

(a) Laughing at your own jokes

I know a kid with Aspergers. He's a good kid. He's going to a good school. Does well in science. Is going to do calculus soon. Knows a good amout about history.
Though the socializing problem is there and he may not understand what history can mean to us or how science plays in the human world as well as most of us do.

Have this thing in my family. My uncle for instance, Graduated MIT top in his class in the 80's and worked at Shaws bagging grocery for like 10 years after college. And helped create Linux.

I know who has assburgers. Most of you do as well.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Sep 2,2009 9:33am
dude i work with has this, he is impossible to deal with.

toggletoggle post by dontlivefastjustdienli at Sep 2,2009 9:38am
two of my uncles are rocket scientists...literally, like worked for NASA n shit, but they cant function in society at all. in fact one of the main reasons neither of them work there anymore is because they cant function as part of a team, you cant even really have a conversation with them because they're so out there, they just have no concept of social skills and interacting.

plus their names are Kent and Brent.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Sep 2,2009 9:40am
yeah, the dude i work with is pretty book smart, but he has no sense of humor whatsoever. If you tell him a joke, he'll sit and think about it for an hour or two, or as long as it takes him to reason out whether or not he should be laughing.... and then IF it was funny, he starts laughing uncontrollably... He's also a Scientologist....classic case of someone not fitting in, and a cult convincing them that they should join.

toggletoggle post by aril at Sep 2,2009 9:41am
so it is safe to say that all of our technological advances have been a product of people with asperger's? Awesome

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 2,2009 9:45am
