So, I'm considering the Army National Guard Reserves as a career change. So far in my young life, my seemingly only options are to continue to search for full-time work, go back to school in the fall (to where I'm already accepted), or try the military.

Anyone with any military experience on this board please share your experiences.

I don't have military experience although I heavily considered it after I graduated college because I wanted to become an officer (not enough people in the military have degrees it seems).
But as a father as well, I'll make a rare serious rttp statement. let me tell you right now that you won't be able to spend that much time with your kid as you'd like, and that you're going to have to make some serious personal sacrifices. Althouh the Reserve isn't really as brutal/time consuming as joining the marines, air force, etc.. it's still going to be a big deal if something happens. so think about what's best for your kid, not for yourself

I think that if you already have kid(s) joining something like this isn't the best idea if you want to see them grow up at all. Especially if you are unmarried to the baby momma. Honestly, this is something that you should have figured out before you started making babies.

Didn't you vote for a war mongering president?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 3,2009 10:24am
I would say:
#1 Job = spend lots of time with kid, but in 20 years you get a watch and a map to the golf courses in the area
#2 School = around for kid, but busy and broke as fuck for 4+ years
#3 Military = deployed and away from kid for 1.5 years to life. Then when you come back you will start with #2.

If it were me, I would go with #2. Just think of all the college tail.

toggletoggle post by darkwor  at Jun 3,2009 10:26am
You're already accepted to school - go to school. Get an education. Then join the military if you want, become an officer, you'll have more options.

Being a poor student working your ass off for 4+ years is worth it. You don't have to limit your job options when you get out.

I have 3 friends that joined the military after school; one joined the army, became a ranger, and died in a helicopter in Afghanistan. The other went to the air force, probably for a career. The last joined the Navy, and said it was the worst choice he had ever made, his service ends in a few months and he can't wait to go to school.

Stay in school kids.

I have been thinking of my daughter which is why I'm not making any official choices on this matter. It's really difficult because while I love being a father, I need to have a career to help support her. Even if I was going to school, finding work is just as hard as it is now. I'm supposed to be seeing a recruiter next week and just discussing my options and getting general info.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jun 3,2009 2:01pm
you have to think in both short term and long term. if you have a supportive family that can help you with anything, then I'd suggest going to school. look up night courses. look up online courses. short term solution would be getting a job now, but you don't want to get stuck at a job that you don't like. college (especially getting an associates or bachelor's degree) does not mean that you'd get an awesome paying job right away. but it will at least help.
sadly, a bachelor's degree today is not what it was worth 20 years ago. anything master's or above is what people REALLY look for these days.
either way you do it, you're going to be so busy in the next few years of your life.

meeting with a recruiter isn't what it used to be. Have fun signing up as they usually badger/fight/reason with you until you agree to sign stuff. If you sign anything there at all, have fun in iraq and not seeing your daughter for 1.5years to life.

1st of all, don't listen to Rev. he hasn't the slightest idea. He wears Birkenstocks for Christs sake.

2nd, it's the reserves, the last place that the country looks to a battle hardened unit.

3rd, there is nothing at all wrong with serving the country that has provided you with the very blanket of security that you were raised under.

4th, DO NOT under any circumstances take anyone's opinion unless they have served. Otherwise they are no better than the "trained liars" that have a quota to fill (which is BS by the way Rev, I don't know whether you're delusional or get your info from chumps who have never really been there.)

5th, I gave 6 years of my life to the active duty Marine Corps. and another 4 in reserves, and have never been more proud of my sacrifices to this country. All as a Rifleman with 2/2 Echo Co. CLNC

Finally, make your own decisions. Full Metal Jacket is about the Marine Corps., not the Army Reserves or the National Guard. Those 2 are a completely different animal with far less training (not to discredit those who serve in any way.)

Make your own decisions, the hippy fags on this board piss on our flag on a daily basis through their shitty dialogue, and demeaning attitude toward any man who serves the flag. Yet they live in complete security because of it. Get used to it, you'll never be appreciated by the ignorant and fortunate, which are one in the same.

If you decide to go, you have my support 100%.

Go to school around your full time work schedule. I don't know what school you were accepted to but a number of colleges offer accelerated programs specifically designed for working adults.

It sucks going from work to class for 4 hours or whatever two nights out of the week for 18 months but it beats the fuck out of getting sent to Afghanistan and if you come home going to the same classes anyway.

I got accepted to Great Bay Community College (http://www.greatbay.edu/index.html ) and I'd be going there for Liberal Arts - Business. If I went through the military, they would help me pay off my old school debt and pay for my future college costs. If they did that, I could just start at UNH instead of doing CC and transferring after.

From the viewpoint of a realist ---

Most people are shitheads, and if you're anywhere near the top, everyone else wants to take your stuff.

Wars will always need to be fought, just like there's always going to be conflict between people. People aren't equal. Some are less capable than others, and they hate the capable.

Even more, combat can be a rush and many people love it. It might be healthy to feel this, more healthy than running away from it for personal convenience.

Every single one of us would be in deep shit if it weren't for our military, law enforcement, even CIA, etc.

I know it sounds good socially to say "war is unnecessary, I'm against war, just give everyone what they want" but that's not reality. It's politeness. Learn the difference or you may end up in a Twilight movie taking a prehensile cock up the ass.

DON'T go to a recruiter and expect to hear the truth out of them. After I quit The Summoned, I was very, very close to joining the Marines, so I figured I'd have my friend who's a Marine come with me to meet with my recruiter just to see what's real and what's not. They're so full of shit you can smell it in their breath she said. There's NO guarantee you will get the job you want, you will end up in Iraq sooner or later with a gun in your hand, and it will not be what they told you it is.

I also know one guy that was supposed to be joining the national guard as a telephone worker, thinking he was gonna be the guy up on the telephone polls making repairs and stuff. What they failed to tell him is that he was actually gonna be in the infantry, and by telephone worker they meant the guy who controls the radio. Luckily he was able to get out of that fast.

Plus, reservists don't get shit. Every reservist I know is a completely arrogant, lazy, unmotivated piece of shit that only thinks of themselves, yet still thinks they're the toughest thing ever. I lost a lot of respect for my best friend just because of that.

Consider your options man, and make the right choice. Do what you think is best for the daughter.

If you decide to go, you have my support 100%.

blah blah blah blah blah, go burn down planned parenthoods, and hunt from a helicopter, right wing cocksucker.

btw, id fuck the life outta her AND her daughter

WOW...you won't be fucking the life out of anything because you're so fucking fat, that I doubt very highly that you can find your own dick under that gut of yours; and if you did, you'd have a heart attack from the physical exertion within the first 30 seconds. Also, nice ear plugs. They look like hula hoops, I'm sure your family is real proud of you. I know that I would be. Don't be pissed at the right wing because you turned out a slovenly, fat piece of shit. It not our fault.

Wow, this the guy who called me a right wing cocksucker.

At least he's thinking of his future by being a left winger. No doubt that this load of shit will need social security one day. Fucker won't even be able to drag his fat ass out of bed in the morning.

Have another donut, piggie. Nice ear plugs by the way, your ears will look great when you're 40, if you don't die of a heart attack by then.

Just remember the political spectrum, folks:
the further you go to the right, the closer you get to the left.
The further you go left, the more you are to the right.

Quit the right wing left wing babbling garbage. Both of your parties ghave produced nothing but socialist war-mongering puppets of Israel in the last 20 years. They are one in the fucking same. Arillius nailed it.

I just said that to someone like 10 minutes ago.

I remember learning about the political spectrum on Day 1 of my political science class. Sounds like it doesn't make any sense, but it does.

The whole concept of parties within the govenment (democrats/republicans) is not only destroying our country from within, but making this country beg for another civil war. It's all fucked.

The poor are already buried -- by their own shitty decisions. Let natural selection work for us.

Far away from the city
Far away from civilization
A secret farm full of obscure persons
And full of weak cattle exists
Every morning the farmfather
Satisfied himself with the cattle
SODOMIZE THE WEAK creatures
Fatigo - it's an everflowing plague
No escape from the penis of dead
No hope for all the dead chicks
Crucio - the same procedure everyday
The same thing the whole night
Sometimes, when travellers enter the farm
They won't return from those pervert people
Get strangulated by the evil farmers
Get buried somewhere in the desert around

You can make deals with the military ya know. I'm only saying this because if you want in, but DON'T want to see combat, you need to get that in writing. I'm just assuming you don't want combat because you have a child, but i could be wrong. I know someone who agreed to serve for 4years in THIS country being a cryptic-translingualist. Basically they(navy) agreed (in a contract) that they would pay for his entire schooling before he goes in (for the job) then serve the 4years, then get out with placement in a job on a military base of his choice with very high salary/benefits/pension. He did extremely well on his ASVABs, but i took them too and thought they were a breeze. So as long as you scored high enough on them, and your REALLY set on going in, you should try negotiating to make it really worth that much of your/your child's life.

I say DO IT.
I really wanted to join up when I was younger but didn't have the balls cause I wanted to be young and stupid and follow my Death Metal dreams. Then again if I didn't have a guitar in my life I probably woulda been in jail or dead from drugs by now.

come on guys, don't shit on the service. we'll see where those beliefs are when they come on our shores.

Pretty much fact. Keith Mutiny signed for delayed enlistment to become a special forces medic after he finishes paramedic training and plans to follow up after he gets out, with medical school paid by the goverment to be a neurosurgeon. Sounds like a plan to me from a person I'd consider to be one of the most intelligent people I know.

Yes, my daughter is the reason I want to stay alive.

I talked about schooling and apparently they stopped doing the college-first option so I would probably have to do a tour in the Middle East. I just hope I qualify for a job that would keep me off the front lines.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 18,2009 11:43pm
I am pretty sure you can see if you qualify before you actually enlist.

toggletoggle post by MillenialKingdom  at Jun 18,2009 11:59pm
Well, I know that. I'm taking the ASVAB and seeing how I do before I even make a decision on this. If I get a high enough score, I can probably get any job I want. My friend Taylor is in Communications and is deploying to Kuwait next year. He got like a high 70 on the test. The minimum score you can get is 50.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 18,2009 11:59pm
the recruiter will take one look at you and say "front line infantry". have fun killing muslims, turkmen, and arabs. just think of it as your own inquisition. your crucade.

toggletoggle post by BoarcorpseJimbo   at Jun 19,2009 12:41am
^like i said, i did real well on it, they offered me great jobs, but i really only took it to get out of classes for a half day. I'm no genus, and that's how it came accross because the test is so easy. You'll be fine.

I know someone who joined the national guard. It changed him. He came back worshipping god and a fan of country music. I'm not making this up.

And evidently, if also makes you believe that anyone who disagrees with you is a 'hippy fag'.
