Yeah, that. My non-metal stuff is generally even more obscure and indy-credulous than my metal picks. For me mainly is super-cheesy mega-false metal.
Tons of balls-in-vice power metal with elves and swords and shit
Prog metal nerdery (lots of bass porn)
(new) Naglfar (mega cheese) and similar corpsepainted melodeath
Demon Burger (every fucking record, I don't care)
Most of the other stuff that people might shit on I fully own up to (like FNM, Type O, Life of Agony, old RHCP, lots of 80s-90s punk/hardcore stuff, old-school and underground hip-hop, old ska and reggae, actual, authentic non-Nashville country) and I think it all holds up on its own merit. NO BLAST BEATS, KICKED OUT OF THE SCENE.
Rich, there is no way you seriously listen to Sum 41. I call bullshit.
Ooh, Atom and his Package. 1000 ironic hipster points for me.
|
|
We have some of the same 'guilty pleasures'..
|
Pennywise
(early)Rancid
NOFX
Nirvana
(early)Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains
AFI [First album when it was more punk-ish]

I loved some of that early Epitaph style punk growing up on a surfboard in Newport, RI. What can I say?

I like early Victory hardcore too. |

Turbonegro has Norway / BM reference cred, you're safe. LOL |
|
|
Turbonegro has Norway / BM reference cred, you're safe. LOL |

Guilty Pleasures = Unorthodox and Non Super Heavy Music Interests.
We all know you can "like what you like" ... get over it and post some some bands that arent slayer and such. |
|
|
|
Turbonegro has Norway / BM reference cred, you're safe. LOL |
Howso? |
BECAUSE, THAT'S WHY |
|
I don't consider Dwarves part of this since they're the greatest band of all time. Same with Turbonegro. |
|
You should feel guilty for NOT listening to the Dwarves. |
|
And Antiseen are part of the C.O.S. so they're cooler than all of us. |

Latly Ive had trouble trying to determine how I ever liked them in the first place, then last week I got really stoned and threw on Vobiscum sathanas for the first time in years. They were actually pretty good before they went all hyperblasty and mad such, soo boring now. |
|

|
guilty as charged |
|
Did i really just read the words "snake river conspiracy?" i forgot about them haha.
I don't feel guilty about these bands but if by guilty pleasure you mean "not death/black metal" then we have this:
311
Prodigy
Deftones
Portishead
Beastie Boys
Sublime
Kottonmouth Kings
Michael Jackson
One Dragonforce Song
God Lives Underwater
Sevendust
Nu-metal bands who's first CDs I really dig:
Slipknot
Mudvayne
Mushroomhead
Staind
Limp Bizkit
Soulfly
I really dig KSE and Unearth too. I like everything Killswitch has ever done and the majority of what Unearth's put out. I really think Shadow's Fall is teh lames though. |
|
i forgot about god lives underwater, i used to like them and pop will eat itself |
|
|
Nu-metal bands who's first CDs I really dig:
Mudvayne
|
Dig lol.
that was actually a pretty decent album |
|
that new kings of leon is pretty good. i might really like that song "decode" from that vampire movie. the name of the band escapes me. it's like a less annoying flyleaf. |

Secrets is the only thing from DF I really like, but damn, it's a good album. (VON cover!) Such garbage now, though.
Hahahaha... I was literally just planning on telling my gf's sister that Kottonmouth Kings were objectively the worst music ever created, and that I could prove it with science. (I was cleaning the living room and found that stinker laying around.) I have a mean, mean hate on for 90s, rock-friendly white boy hip-hop.
But, y'know, whatev. LOL
(Ok, I just told her and she told me to prove it. I declined.)
Alright, there are the odd moments when I need to hear Dragonforce, and nothing else will do. Can't usually get through the CD, but there it is.
I can listen to the 2nd CD from the debut digipak. I tell myself that it's ok because there are Discharge covers on there, but we all know better. |
|
|
Did i really just read the words "snake river conspiracy?" i forgot about them haha.
I don't feel guilty about these bands but if by guilty pleasure you mean "not death/black metal" then we have this:
Sublime
|
ah, so you like a cover band eh? most of sublime's songs are ripped off from old reggae artists from jamaica. aint nothin like white surfer junkies singing about being ripped from africa and oppressed by white men
|
|
There will very shortly be a "DYA is old" photo retrospective up on here featuring me with terrible 16 year old facial hair and both Gorilla Biscuits and Sam Black Church shirts, so I guess I'd better put those down. (Both still appreeshed.)
Oh, yeah. Tree. I don't give a fuck, that shit = The Rat / Hempfest in the mid-90s for me, so good memories trumps being terrible.
Ok, now we're going back. TONS of FSU-approved tough guy nonsense from the early-to-mid 90s. Brawlpark? Blackbelt? Oh, yeah. Don't listen to it much this millennium, but it'll still put a mildly embarrassed smile on my face. I'd put Bitter down here but Bitter still rules, fuck you, I don't care. Slapshot split was fucking killer. (Oh, and... umm... heh heh. Full Contact, anybody? Like, not the New York's Hardest one, but the 508 area super BFB wannabe one? FCC MOTHERFUCKER. LOLOLOLOL) |
|
Also at one point I owned a Temperance shirt. *tucks penis* |
|
|

Ha, I still have both their CDs. |
|
Hehehe... Well, Lifetime wasn't playing around anymore so... (It would be some time before I figured out that only Descendants can pull off sounding like Descendants. ;) ) |
|
Anybody remember Full Swing from Uxbridge? Played my first show at one of theirs. |
|
There's not a damn thing wrong with the Cars. |

Plus Ric Ocasek produced one of the most influential hardcore records, ever. So yuh. |

I also listen to a multitude of bands under the heavy music umbrella that aren't exactly 1337, but i don't feel like listing them all at the moment |
|
Fuck yeah Gogol Bordello. That's a party right there, that's what that is. |
|
|
Fuck yeah Gogol Bordello. That's a party right there, that's what that is. |
I saw them in Georgia. Incedible. |
|
I'm not embarrassed of anything I listen to, fuck you. I was cranking Peaches all day at school. |
|
Third Eye Blind and Everclear. I do agree with Pam though, in that I'm not ashamed to say that I like them. |
|
I have my iPod organized by genres so here's what I have non metal related
Death Rock -19 artists
Goth - 20 artists
New Wave -23 artists
Post Punk - 19 artists

ITT: EVERYONE IS KICKED OUT OF THE SCENE
The entire New England metal scene now consists of Graveside Service and The Brutality Remains, who are apparently the only bands left that don't listen to Avril Lavigne or something. |
|
|
I left out all the country I listen to because thanks to shit like Hank III country music is cool now. |
it's not that country music is cool now, good music is good music. there's still plenty of crap country music out there no matter who is telling you it's " cool."
on that note i gotta agree with a lot of people on here there should never be guilty pleasures as far as music, it's fucking music. with that said i agree with MFR i just feel guilty about listening to music in the first place, it done taken my monies and way too much of my time.
booooooooooooongtits! |
|
Let me just say,i don't feel guitly about any of it, but i listen to a LOT of:
Classical
Light electro rock
techno
80's new wave
goth/folk
blues
gospel
Just genres i know, but it would take hours to list all the bands within them. |
|
|
Fuck yeah Gogol Bordello. That's a party right there, that's what that is. |
woooooooooord....they are the bee's knees |
|
I really don't have any "guilty pleasures" as I like what I like. Its really alot easier for me to list what I DONT listen to.
most rap
country (except early 50s/60s)
poppunk( this includes pop and pop-punk)
most indie rock
couple sub-genres of metal (metalcore/deathcore) that kinda stuff
|
|
Other than what I listed, I listen to. From DEVO to AC/DC and Aerosmith to Count Basie to Mental Horror |
|
Tegan and Sara
Ladytron
Depeche Mode
Joy Division
The Cure
Sisters of Mercy |
|
hell yeah jimbo! Keeping the raving scene alive by listening to techno. I've always wanted to be an electronic dj. I'm such a nerd. My street cred=-1000 pts. now |
|
ahaha, Clawfinger. I used to have "Deaf Dumb Blind" when I was in 5th grade. That tape sucks so hard.
"Tell me the truth
the truth muthafucka!!!
Tell me the truth, tell me the truth, tell me the truth!
The truth you sucka!"
Fucking Swedes.
I can't really think of anything I would see as a guilty pleasure. If I like it I like it. No matter what the hell it is. |
|
Pink Floyd.
Lots of other classic rock as well. |
|
Haha, GC. Want a rollercoaster haircut and a mustache with that? LOL |
|
Half the music I listen to is electronica, trip-hop, psytrance...bands like
Massive Attack
Juno Reactor
Infected Mushroom
Shpongle
Entheogenic
Ken Ishii
Laika
Bjork
Digicult
Sundial Aeon
And of course the darker stuff, like Front Line Assembly, Nine Inch Nails, Laether Strip, and dark ambient, harsh industrial, all that fun stuff.
Soundtrack stuff like Angelo Badalamenti (best known for David Lynch soundtracks)
Classical without question, Mozart's Requiem is out of this world.
Jazz from Charles Mingus to Etta James.
Quality hip-hop, new and old, like MF Doom, Wu-Tang, etc.
I was recently turned on to Nick Cave, I love that style.
No pleasure should be considered guilty but if I had any, they'd be David Bowie and X-JAPAN.
Now for the haters:
I enjoy classic rock but I don't really listen to it anymore, probably listened to too much growing up.
I used to really like power metal, but one day I woke up and realized I didn't. Some I'll still listen to, Kamelot and Firewind just make straight up good music. And Manowar is a good time. EDIT: Blind Guardian is one of my favorite bands.
I HATE WHINY VOCALS WITH A PASSION. This includes The Cure and the trillion ripoffs.
I hate -core. Unless it's Napalm Death-style grindcore. Misuse of the "grindcore" term is punishable by flogging.
I've never heard a "country" outfit that I like.
Indie rock is meh. I used to enjoy a lot of it...most of it is insanely boring. For me to like it, it needs to have good vocals and lyrics, and not sound like pop. Tegan and Sara are hot, but that's exactly the style I can't stand.
|
|
The Cure is awesome. Especially Pornography. |
|
Oh and one more thing, I want to fuck M.I.A. |
|
pornography WAS the cures best.
And Pires, i was a raver for almost 5years. I worked for a rave promotion company, i probably went to a couple hundred "raves" (of which i remember about 10) But i still love all forms of techno, jungle, trance, house, hardcore, all of it, and it's all perfect to use in stead of a metronome, whenever i wanna do exercises but don't wanna listen to boring clicking i put techno through the PA. |
|
|
But i still love all forms of techno, jungle, trance, house, hardcore, all of it, and it's all perfect to use in stead of a metronome, whenever i wanna do exercises but don't wanna listen to boring clicking i put techno through the PA. |
I do the exact same thing...I haven't used my Korg in a while! BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-FUCKOFF |
|
ahem.... didn't i show the techno instead of a metranome trick? I thought i did the first time we did drum stuff together... i could be crazy, but that's the first thing i show most peeps. |
|
In the world of electronic music, I haven't found anything better than Autechre, Aphex Twin (especially early material and his various pseudonym's), and Dither. I can't stand that pulsating bass programming, or "hold hand's" dance/rave stuff. |
|
BONG HITS...i like to think i thought of that myself. |
|
And the above doesn't include early electronic music like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Shulze, Kraftwerk and any of that goodness. |
|
also Jim, off-topic, but Jesse got the Vic Firth isolation headphones, PERFECT FOR PRACTICING TO MUSIC, lives up to their name. I think they're 40 bucks. |
|
haha I raved for a good 3+ years. Man I was so gay. I love the music, hate the scene. It's eerily similar isn't it? I feel the same way now about hXc. Love the music, but plenty of dbags around ruining it for everyone. |
|
I need to throw on some Neptune Towers now. |
|
I liek old Waxtrax-style indusrial. One of the very first tapes that really altered my world was Ministry's "Land of Rape and Honey" on one side and Dead Kennedys' "Plastic Surgery Disasters" on the other. |
|
Earth Crisis- Firestorm and Gomorah's Season Ends
Strife-I have a Strife 7"
Marilyn Manson- Portrait of American Family and Antichrist Superstar
Garth Brooks
Cave In- Beyond Hypothermia and Until Your Heart Stops
Barrit
Ghetto Boys
Cyprus Hill- "Temple of Boom" only
The Moody Blues
Dr Dre- The Chronic
Banana Rama
Bon Jovi- Slippery When Wet was the first cassette I ever bought 86'
Pantera
Queen
At the Drive In |
|
Haha... I have seen Strife a few times. Nobody should be ashamed to listen to Queen. Never yet surpassed on so many levels. |
|
|
Ghetto Boys
Cyprus Hill- "Temple of Boom" only
Dr Dre- The Chronic
|
You know all those guys are black right? |
|
Not so guilty pleasures of mine:
Jimmy Cliff
Marie LaForet
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (downloaded it on a whim, nothing amazing but decent music to be miserable to)
Bauhaus
Bjork |
|
paul CNV
Did you just list BARRIT as a guilty pleasure? They fucking ruled buddy!!
Pires- i stopped "raving" about 7 years ago. |
|
queen
deadkennedys
descendents
sublime
nofx
morgan heritage
social d
Theres probably some more really gay stuff i just can't think right now
|
|
There's this song on the russian station on GTA IV that I really liked. Enough to research who it was, and it turned out to be like some ukrainian world/pop star called Ruslana who came into fame the same way lordi did, like some european version of american idol. Point is, if I'm listening to it and someone walks in, I switch it to Immolation. A true guilty pleasure |
|
i like alot of punk, jazz, blues/blues rock, and a little classical
also, i dig very few rappers/rap groups (usually only shit that makes me laugh... MC Hawking, ICP, The Terrorizah, 2 Live Crew etc.)
although not metal or grind, i do not consider any of those "guilty pleasures" though... i dig what i dig
|
|
One Life Crew > 2 Live Crew.
teehee |
|
Haha... I have entirely too many Social D-themed tattoos. |
|
|
One Life Crew > 2 Live Crew.
teehee |
I'm from the neighborhood, freak. |
|
The Cure and Cat Power are the 2 that I most frequently listen to when no one is around to make fun of me.
My tastes are pretty broad, so I imagine my list of guilty pleasures would be pretty large, if I were to really think about it. Great music is great music though.
Oh, and I kinda like that "Umbrella" song by Rhianna, but mostly cause she's a sexy lady. Hell of a fucking hook though.
Did I just type that? Fuck.
Seriously though... I'm kidding. Am I kidding?

Actually i agree with almost this entire list. Great shit, and fuck it, here's a few i think YOU guys would consider guilty, lets see if anyone else is into em.
Flemming and John
The Gathering
Cold Blood
Etta James
Voltaire
Faith and the Muse
The Tiger Lillies
MMW
The Birthday Party
Bjork
Blind Melon
BT
The Chameleons UK
Charles Ives
" " Mingus
" " Parker
Coil
The faint
First aid kit
to name a few. |
|
I don't see why anyone would think Nick Cave or The Birthday Party are gay to listen to. Very influential musicians, and off-putting for their time. I can hear a slight influence of them on certain SWANS material and others. |
|
90% of the bands posted are legitimately good bands, these aren't guilty pleasures at all. |
|
Depeche Mode
The Smiths/Morrissey
The Cure
Dolly Parton
|
|
oh yeah, I'm obscessed with Duffy. |
|
|

Challenging listening, involved material. I can dig it.
Diamanda Galas, anyone? |
|
|
Depeche Mode
The Smiths
The Cure
|
hahahahahahaha
i only find that funny because seth putnam regularly rips on those 3 bands in AxCx Lyrics |
|
Nick Cave is the burliest, most heterosexual music ever.
Also, add a metric fuckton of 80s cock rock to my list. Lots of Crue, Skid Row, Cinderella, WASP, Poison, Bon Jovi, etc. |
|
Definitely have some pussy '80s new wave/darkwave shit (Joy Division, Cure, Gang of Four, Sisters of Mercy, etc) in my music collection. Something to listen to when I'm falling asleep or reading a book or something. Probably not as embarrassing as the 2 Cradle of Filth CDs I own... |
|
Nick Barker pretty well redeems their first two, IMHO. |
|
TPoEMF and Dusk and Her Embrace rule, even if the vocals do get jarring. |
|
any love for world folk, particularly East Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern chicks really belting out awesome melodies. |
|
"Diamanda Galas, anyone?"
yes... yes yes and yes |
|
I feel guilty about none of my pleasures
and I don't think most of yours should produce guilt
and lol @ tunak tunak, I blasted that for at least 10 hours one day a few years back. |
|
MikeOvDecrepitvde said:I don't see why anyone would think Nick Cave or The Birthday Party are gay to listen to. Very influential musicians, and off-putting for their time. I can hear a slight influence of them on certain SWANS material and others.
No shit man, this thread was about stuff you listen to that wasn't metal. The term "guilty pleasures" was in reference to something "The normal deathmetal kid wouldn't like". I'm definitely not embarrassed about anything i listen to. |
|
Michael Jackson and Elton John. |
|
Alexisonfire
The Acacia Strain
Michael Jackson (Thriller, dude, seriously)
Christian hip-hop
Relient K
and other stuff.
Also, I think "I Kissed A Girl" is incredibly catchy and I can't help liking it. |
|
i actually like i kissed a girl too.. i guess do i feel bad about that one... |
|
I wouldn't really call it guilty.
Nofx
Screeching Weasel
The Toy Dolls
Pennywise
Bad Religion
Queen
AFI (first 3)
Cock Sparrer
Devo
Frank Zappa
The Showcase Showdown
CIV
Goldfinger (this is pretty guilty)
Herbie Hancock
The Lillingtons
The Vandals
Protest The Hero (guilty)
It kind of keeps going on and on i guess. This was a waste of time

i have a large collection of music of that style . it is the ultimate escape music. |
|
large collection huh? Could you list some names for me to listen to? |
|
The Tiger Lillies. Yes! Try showing that band to anybody and see how much they hate it. |
|
I'm pretty sure that if you're human then you like at least a few songs by Micheal Jackson |
|
I can't get enough tiger lillies. The "ShockHead Peter" soundtrack is unbelievable. "Banging in the nails"? rujjoking? SO GOOD! "Slough" is evil, and "I'm terrible" talks about ravaging sweet virgin nuns, and blowing up orphanages, and shitting on priests doorsteps.. in front of the priests. I can't say enough for this band. |

DUDE, I have "The Rose", I love that fucking CD. |
|
I also love Faith and The Muse. That's sort of a guilt pleasure because they're RenFaire dorks but the music rules. |
|
i'm not guilty when I listen to any music. i'm generally extremely open-minded to all types of music. the only stuff I don't like are the pop/rock/alternative shit bands they play on the radio today. too whiney.
I don't listen to anything that lacks true emotion, desire, artistry, and atmosphere. the emo/screamo scene exemplifies everything I hate when it comes to music - something which is hard for me to say.
