I just started a new game of this last night and I'm still thoroughly impressed, even for a game that came out in 2000.

It is one of the most underlooked PS1 titles, as it was one of its last releases.

It is by far one of the best dark/fantasy dungeon-crawling games ever created. It was designed by the same people that did Final Fantasy Tactics and the music was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto - one of my favs.

The character movement is more realistic than games that come out today.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for people that like dark, dreary games.

This is up there as one of my favorite PSX games along with FFT and Xenogears

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 2:39pm
Not to mention you can create your own weapons..

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 2:40pm
Lets be nerdy together

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 2:40pm
YES! weapon creation was awesome

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 2,2009 2:40pm
it's been sitting on my floor after I couldn't get into it.

Honestly, this game is still unique. Excellent story, graphics, music, replay value, atmosphere... etc. Everything is ingenius in the game.
Recommended for fans of any RPG, but even hack&slash games - Diablo too. Zelda fans would shit themselves if they played this. It's like the adult version of Zelda.
(zelda games are way too cartooney now if you ask me)

The twilight princess was dark. Orcarina of Time still stands as one of my favorite games of all time. VS is definitly something no RPG fan should go without playing. Another game every RPG fan should play is CHRONO TRIGGER. I know you've played this game arillius.

I've played just about every RPG for NES, SNES and Genesis. It amazes me that I've gotten laid.

Another one of my favorite Zelda-type games: Crusader of Centy for Genesis. A little kidsy and cartooney, but it ranks right up there with Zelda. I remember buying it when it came out and beating it in like 2 days though.
It didn't really start getting popular until ROMS took over.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Feb 2,2009 2:50pm
Vagrant Story is awesome but if it were updated with at least a faster processing rate and some voice acting, it would easily be one of the best games of all time.

Neither did phantasy star. No one from america wanted to play that game until ROMS became the norm and it had a nolstagic effect. Only then did people take notice. Still one of the best games as far as story/character devlopment goes. The final-boss battle is a little lackluster however.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 2:54pm
Which Phantasy Star? III?

Martins: Yes, I was actually thinking about it having voice-acting last night. If it is missing anything it'd be that. but then again, that would have been a lot of work because there's a shit-ton of dialogue.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 2:59pm
I + III. The most well known being III.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 3:02pm
Somewhat off topic too:
Another underlooked RPG that came out in the mid 90s but was for the PC: Albion. It was a german RPG but had first person elements as well as third person elements. Anyone that has played that game knows whats up. Check it out if you can.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 3:04pm
I have heard of that but never really put any thought into it. Maybe I will now...

btw, have you played any of the new squarenix games for the 360 like infinite undiscovery or last remnant? i have been thinking about picking one of them up.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 3:10pm
Nope. My video game knowledge ends around 2000. I'm strictly a console gamer from '85-'00. Anything after that I've got little exposure.. I was too busy playing TFC, Counterstrike, Starcraft, and various other games online.

I've meddled in some 360 titles because my friend has it but haven't played those titles.

If it were re-released on PS3 or something, they could totally do all the voice acting no problem. They could even update the graphics. It would be amazing.

In the meantime, I can just build up hype for FFXIII and FFVersusXIII

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 3:13pm
Also thought of that last night. If they were to re-release that game on PS3, it'd be ridiculous.
It got crap exposure in the states because it was released late for a PSX game

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Feb 2,2009 3:18pm
Yeah, the system is sweet. Just slow to respond. That's my only beef with the game.

I play cs like its my job. Been fraggin kids since everyone played on WON.

I also just preordered this:

I actually preordered it a month ago and I CAN'T WAIT

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 3:43pm
WON was so much better than steam.
Lately I've been playing the GunGame mod for CS. Only 2-3 servers have it I think. It's pretty tough but sharpens your skills.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 3:45pm
gungame is really fun. so is reverse gungame. i've gotten over how retarded TF2 is compared to TFC/QWTF and play that a lot now.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 3:59pm
I can't get into TF2.
TFC, hell I used to play that every fucking day and used to partake in clan battles. Right now I play on Drippy's 2fort server every now and then.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 4:00pm
Yea TF2 takes some getting used to. DoD:S is still fun to play. Thats probably the only source sequel to a HL1 game that doesn't completely blow.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 4:01pm
When I get home I'll have to add your ass to steam friends

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 4:04pm
other good mods:

SVEN COOP - new one just released, but havent played it yet.
Wizard Wars - was kind cool but no one played it
Firearms - meh
Ricochet - interesting
Action Half-life - running and jumping ftw

And.. shit.. I can't remember others right now. I primarily played TFC and used to do custom maps all the time.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 4:09pm
Ricochet is fun
DMC still rules
Pubbing avelanche is still win
I played the ship for a while too

The only HL1 game i've been playing a lot recently is cs/tfc other than that its cs:s

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 4:10pm
DMC is dead. I was playing that last week and most of the servers just contain bots. WTF!

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Feb 2,2009 4:11pm edited Feb 2,2009 4:11pm
yea you really need to get lucky. usually on the weekends and late at night you can find at least 1 DMC server with 5+ real players

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 4:17pm
I played on a server called "Lunatic Rage" or something like that a few years ago and it was constantly full with people. damn, I knida miss DMC in its heyday. did you ever play the TFC map Turkeyburgers?

i do believe i played that map before. i'm surprised i remember something like that considering the amount of custom maps that are out there.

it was the one where there was low gravity, everyone was small, and you're in a kitchen and living room.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Feb 2,2009 10:55pm edited Feb 2,2009 10:55pm
I just got done playing it... still haven't made it out to the fucking city yet. Still underground in the tombs.
Such a nice, dark game..

I finally received the S ending in Clock Tower earlier.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at May 17,2010 3:37pm
Listening to the soundtrack.
Fuck your megaman music, this shit is way better.

Beat VG like 10 years ago. Was awesome. I'm ass deep right now in the middle of Grandia. I recommend that game too.

2 hours into Vagrant Story. I had to take a break from Chrono Cross, it is soooo goooddammmm looong. VAGRANT STORY RULES. Squaresoft took a lot of chances with gameplay and it paid off. It's a classic atmospheric dark dungeon crawl with a plot and substance. LOVE IT.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Sep 28,2011 9:11am
I step over this CD over and over again in my house.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 28,2011 9:15am
i bought it on PSN. this game goes anywhere from $20 - $150 on ebay bro.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 28,2011 9:24am
I've got the copy of it and the strat guide. Love this game, especially when you get into the underworld and fight the Lichs. the ending was fucking epic too.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 28,2011 9:27am
i downloaded the strat guide PDF. you really need it, i had trouble figuring out how the affinity/resistance system worked.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Sep 28,2011 9:30am
Ill sell you the original copy of the guide for 50 bucks

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 28,2011 9:51am
only downloading out of print guides are real

Unless it's just a generic sample i'm pretty sure the groans at the beginning of this track were pulled from this game
