I was gonna go see this at the theater in New Haven tonight but was randomly given a DVD screener earlier in the day. Fucking great movie. Marisa Tomei's ass is GOLD. She totally made me fat in the pants. Highly recommended. |

Saw this and enjoyed it. Mickey Rourke is one of my favorite actor's and he gave another strong performance. I found the story to be both humorous and somber.
Angel Heart and Barfly are both backed as great films. Falling Angel was also a cool book. |

haha, seriously though, i just saw this on saturday...it was great, i would reccomend it to anyone....wrestling fan or not.... it's just an excellent movie, plus ya get to see Marissa Tomei naked (who looks alot better naked than i thought she would).
and, if you are a wrestling fan, the matches in the flick are really well scripted, it's pretty damn cool. |

I saw this over the weekend...really good and Rourke
was brilliant as a famous wrestler coming to the end
of his career. Sad and poignant...

This film is incredible. The fact that Rourke didn't win every oscar possible, plus all of next year's oscars is a complete injustice. I'm still hearing rumors that Nicholas Cage was originally cast to play the lead in this, and I think it would have robbed the world of an amazing work that only Mickey Rourke could have done justice to.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS COMING UP...
Aronofsky is the man too. This was a really visceral film in a lot of ways, not just with the mayhem going on inside the ring, but with the more subtle scenes that showed the pain and discomfort he went through in his daily life.
There were a couple things I could have done without. #1. The scene with him and his daughter on the wharf. Their relationship was necessary for his character, I get it. But that scene just didn't fit in the film. It was too bright, and used too many wide shots. It went from an Aronofsky film to Sleepless in Seattle for that whole scene, and I just didn't appreciate it.
#2. I didn't like that they added the applause and cheering tracks to the scene where he was getting ready to go out to the deli counter. I think it was more than enough to keep it subtle, and to shoot it the same way they shot his wrestling entrance scenes. I'm not an idiot, I get the point they're trying to make. Aronofsky, traditionally rarely uses non-diagetic sound like that, and I think it was kind of overkill for that scene.
Other than those 2 minor things I can't think of anything I'd change about this film. |

i agree. i thought the sounds of the machines humming and whirring in the back of the store hinted enough at being crowd noise, so the actual crowd noise wasn't necessary. the machine sounds, combined with the way the scene was shot with him walking toward the curtains, did enough to mimic a wrestling entrance. |

I think I see what you mean stylistically regarding that beach scene with his daughter, but I think that the symbolism there was that the light and openness and relative happiness of that scene was meant to contrast with his normally very depressing, constricted lifestyle. I also thought that the conversation he had with his daughter was one of the strongest moments of his acting in the entire film. |

that was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, but i agree about the way it was shot. the cinematography in that scene was more polished and typical, while the rest of the movie was grittier and more low-end. |

I don't know if I buy the symbolism angle, but yeah in retrospect I guess it was a different set of emotions and a very different situation from the rest of the film so it needed to be shot very differently. Shooting a scene like that the same way they shot the gritty visceral scenes in the rest of the movie wouldn't have worked. It just threw me off a little still. |

Yo what, went to see this awesome movie yesterday, and was really blown away. One thing particular to me is that I am very familiar with that New Jersey area by way of my wife's family and I loved how they worked it all in (the power lines and the train tracks, Bruce final track, Asbury Park boardwalk and Casino where the Stone Pony is right across the street). While that detracted from some here, this was awesome for me; I have run on that boardwalk many times.
But more importantly, I feel we got some huge metal props here. Like holy shit, was not BALLS TO THE WALL used perfectly here? Doesn't this song totally nail it as far as Randy's commitment to that fight? I did some head banging in the theater, my wife is used to it by now.
