New site? Maybe some day.

Ok, so I'm starting up an RTTP Dwarf Fortress succession game. If I'm the only one to try it, so be it, but hopefully one or two of you retards will try your hand after me.
Here's how it works: Somebody (i.e., me) starts a game in Fortress Mode. I'll pick one of the starting dwarves and nickname him after myself - that's "me." I play for a year (until the first day of Spring), get things started as best I can. I'll take plenty of screenshots, and keep monthly diary entries, more or less "in character." Then on the first day of spring, I save the game, zip up the whole thing, and post it on Rapidshare. The next person DLs the game from there, names another dwarf after themselves, and takes over for the next year, trying not to screw over the fortress TOO hard in the process, continuing and/or cancelling my pet projects, starting their own, etc.. And so on. Hilarity should ensue shortly. For a good example, check out the epic saga of Boatmurdered: ( http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/ ) (Keep in mind this is the much older, 2d version of the game - but the same principles apply.)
You wanna take pictures of any major projects you start, so the next guy can figure out how things work when he takes over - or not, the hell with him. Right? Try to get shots of any funny stuff that happens, like deaths and dismemberments. It's a good idea to get a shot or at least a verbal description of any trade agreements you make for exports - like, that the humans want all the obsidian dildoes you can make, and will pay double the going rate for them. And take some shots of the fortress where it stands when you're on your way out, so we can see how things are going. Keep in mind, the idea here isn't for things to go smoothly - it's way funnier if you pile on too many production orders so you can bemoan your lazy workers, start useless and/or dangerous vanity projects, squander precious resources, and get a few dwarves killed. Just try not to flood the fortress or anything like that, leave enough dwarves alive for the next guy to try.
Now, I'll pick a relatively interesting starting location - it'll have plenty of resources, but also plenty of beasties running around to cause humourous amounts of death. So you'll want to make sure there's some sort of military, and keep things relatively secure and trap-ful. Other than that, have fun. No worries if you don't know how to play DF; the wiki is here ( www.dwarffortresswiki.net) and it'll show you literally everything you need to know. And if you mess things up trying, so much the better. Feel free to ask any questions here, I'll check the thread daily if anyone actually does this.
STRIKE THE EARTH.

no, NO, NOOOO! There's already a DF thread.
Also, from what I remember, if you have XP, don't you need DOSBOX to run DF? It's slow as hell on my computer. I could use VDMsound but I don't think it's the sound that's the problem. |

trust me, you may not know what the fuck is going on. |

LOLWUT? No, not even a little bit - hell, I don't know how you'd even get it to run in DOSbox, it can tax a modern PC just running on Windows (at least if you let the cat population get out of control). This isn't an old game, or a DOS game, it just has ASCII graphics. The key is start with a small area, and keep the amount of animals and crap running around on the map down. (Cages work well here.) Also close out all the crap you have in your system tray. |

You should.

This is true. You have to RTFM (i.e., the wiki), and it still takes a minute to get the hang of it. Totally worth it, though. I'll put some mini-tutorial stuff in the diary entries, but all you really need to do is read the "my first fortress" guide on the wiki. Plus, literally any topic you're curious about is spelled out there in great detail. |
|
xmikex, you seriously have to get in on this - we need the RTTP Comedy All-Stars on this one. |
|
Dude, I srsly can't get past the damn opening logos. It takes a good 5 minutes to load just one. I gotta fool around with it. I can't remember how I got it to work smoothly last time. |
|
I'd be willing to do this although I'd really like to start a "Let's Play" for Extreme Warfare Revenge or one of the Baseball Mogul games. |
