Frizzle Fry, Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda = win

Tim Alexander has always been an influence for me.

One of my favorite bands. I can respect anything that Claypool or anything that the original Primus guys do. Herb's other side project Attention Deficit was a good listen.

If you had worded it this way I would agree with you 100%, I love those three albums and happen to be a fan of funky slap bass.

Wow. I was expecting to be lynched. Good to see some other fans here.

PS. I think Les Claypool has a brain tumor.

I haven't heard much Primus, but "Iowan Gal" (I think it's Les' solo stuff) is a helluva tune.

toggletoggle post by yummy at Jan 27,2008 2:59pm
Haha, corn corn, chicken and corn. That's genius right there. Brain tumor or not.
I'm a fan of anything that can't be confused with any other band. Primus falls in that category.
Come with us. We'll sail the seas of........................cheese.

they're an awesome live band too! Frizzle Fry is my favorite album. Suck On This is also good.

Shit's unreal; can't beat it. Long-time fan, although I'm really only familiar with the earlier shit. (Pork Soda and before.) What I've heard of the later stuff is ok.

Anybody else enjoy Oysterhead?

toggletoggle post by immortal13 at Jan 27,2008 3:34pm
Primus is great. Claypool is definitely a big inlfluence, if you could tell by a lot of the tapping I do.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jan 27,2008 5:54pm
I'm honestly shocked at how many people like this band.

toggletoggle post by ZJD   at Jan 27,2008 5:58pm
I used to love Primus, now I just like them a whole lot but can't remember the last time I listened to them except for The Brown Album a couple months ago. Frizzle Fry is my favorite by a mile but the Brown Album needs mentioning in this thread. I also really dig some of Les's other projects including Oysterhead and Frog Brigade. I especially liked FB before they had much of their own stuff and just played things from Holy Mackerel and Sausage and stuff. Holy Mackerel I like as much as any Primus release.

toggletoggle post by ZJD   at Jan 27,2008 6:00pm
Also, I sae the Frog Brigade with Tim Alexander on drums before Purple Onion came out and it was great.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Jan 27,2008 6:16pm

There are no bad Primus albums either. Don't get me wrong, Tim Alexander is probably my biggest influence, seriously (my 2nd kid's name is Timothy Alexander, and it would be coincidence if I wasn't such a Herb fan.) but even the shit with Bryan Mantia is solid.

Antipop...

toggletoggle post by diarrhea_blumpkin at Jan 27,2008 8:18pm
i dont want to sound like a queer or nothing... but i'm a big fan of anything that les does.

toggletoggle post by yummy at Jan 27,2008 8:24pm
Even Antipop was worth listening to tho. Not that many great songs but still better than half the other shit that comes out these days. I like the Bucket of Bernie Brains album. I saw Les on the Whales of Woe tour. I wasn't overly impressed but just being in the same room as Les Claypool is still an honor. Plus, they played a Sausage song and one off of the Holy Mackerel. I can't say that about too many other musicians. Not to take away from others. But, he has had quite an impact on my outlook on music.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Jan 27,2008 9:31pm
the brown album was so fucking wierd.

All I can think of is the scene at the end of Empire Records: "the pixies have way better bass lines than primus!"

that said, I was a fan of everything up til Pork Soda.

Then you, sir, are old. Pork Soda was, after all, at the tail end of the first half of their catalog - therefore over 50% of Primus releases came out after PS. IT'S SCIENCE.

But I hear ya.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Jan 28,2008 1:01pm
Possessed - arguably, he was in the FIRST death metal band (depending on what definition you take).

He and Les were also in Blind Illusion, which was apparently progressive tech-thrash - I've never heard it, but with those two players, the idea sounds amazing. Come to think of it, maybe I'll track down some now and give you a review.

Listening to BI now; so far it's cool, but I'd have to take it home and listen to it on real speakers to get the full effect. Production is what you'd expect for a no-money debut from 1988.

Blind Illusion is pretty "meh." I was excited when I heard about it but let down when I actually got the mp3s. There's plenty better obscure old school prog thrash out there from that era. The only reason that band is even reasonably well-remembered is because of what the lineup later went on to do.

The first time I ever really got "fucked up" was on my way to a Primus concert with my brother. I think I was like 13 and he was about 17 or so (obviously old enough to drive). The show was in Lewiston, ME and other than the fact that Limp Bizkit (whom was completely unknown at the time) opened the show, I cannot recall much of what happened that night.
