What kind of music do you play in the background?

For me, I usually play Doom Metal or Ambient/Progressive stuff like Jesu or Isis.

I can't read with music on.

I also play doomy stuff...Daylight Dies is a favorite when reading....just helps me relax a bit.

if music is playing when i'm reading it can only be something like jazz or classical, anything with lyrics will distract me. i prefer to read in silence.

You should try listening to books on tape and reading song lyrics at the same time. Boy, thats hard

I can only read with instrumental music on. Sumthing like isis or explosions in the sky. Liquid tension although instrumental is too crazy for me to concentrate on my book.

Depends on what I'm reading really. Most of the time it's in silence, but I'm reading Bill Shields' Rosey the Baby Killer right now, and listening to Pelican. If I listen to shit when I read it's got to be background, ambient, almost not there, and it has to be instrumental and somewhat mellow unless the book I'm reading pulls me toward something specific. I read Lords of Chaos while listening to Mayhem, Dimmu, Melechesh, Old Man's Child, etc., and when I read American Hardcore, I had Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion and the Cro Mags pumping behind me almost the whole book through. Like I said though, the book dictates what (if any) music plays in the background.
