snazzy. linux is finally looking like a more friendly os for casual desktop use (in my opinion anyway. I know people have loved it for that use for years)

toggletoggle post by sxealex nli at Jul 14,2007 12:20pm
i didnt have to type a single command this was all point and click set up

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Jul 14,2007 12:23pm
Oh I don't mean the use of the command line... I mean that generally the default setup of the GUIs with most distros is boring.

Is this KDE or Gnome?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 14,2007 12:26pm
huh, how did you get that 3-d cube thing to work?

toggletoggle post by sxealex nli at Jul 14,2007 12:44pm
synaptic package manager type beryl click all the boxes except the debg stuff... then u can add it as a start up item. i dunno maybe i had to add a repository but i dont remember doing it.

pretty slick looking

sick... im gonna be dual booting ubuntu 7.04 and xp soon. this has made me even more excited.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 14,2007 4:45pm
I'm running 7.04 now. it you are used to redhat, suse, or any of the others that people use, things are in different places. ubuntu is debian based like knoppix.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 14,2007 5:48pm
yea but whatever its still really similar.

its gnome. i had an almost identical set up on kde... but as u know gnome is like 1/2 as much of a system hog. The window manager is independent of the desktop environment im pretty sure u can use anything i think maybe. my friend was using enlightenment i dunno if beryl will work with that ill hav eto find out.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 14,2007 6:04pm
I always wanted to install enlightenment, but I always forget too.
that used to be the king of hoggy windows managers.

i used fedora core 6 for like a month... so im not really too used to how it was. ubuntu looks like it will be better for me.

the dood i know thats using it says it takes up only 25 megs of ram

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 14,2007 6:48pm
it's just they put system things in sligtly different locations. plus with debian you never log in as root, you always have to sudo

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 14,2007 6:49pm
yea the root account is disabled. makes getting hacked that much harder

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 14,2007 7:43pm
yeah, but it's just a bit more annoying cause I can't do a lot of thngs as easily.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2007 12:33am
u can enable the root account

this of it as, I bought the car and the fuzzy dice. the car (adorned with fuzzy dice) is sitting in my yard. it's all insured and everything, but I have no clue how to drive it.

Just physically turn the monitor around, Mac will sense it and form a new screen on whichever side is facing you.

ok, there is no "beryl-manager"
there is "beryl-settings"
and when I do that there is no "enable"

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 10:59am
go to a terminal and type beryl-manager. if its not there u didnt install all he packages when u searched beryl

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 10:59am
anyway it should be under system tools now

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2007 11:03am
I'm installing the dev and some other packages now, let's see if it's there after that.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2007 11:09am
ok, it makes VNC go :(

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 11:59am
? go? like uninstall?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2007 12:01pm
doesn't work with VNC so it's useless for me.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 1:15pm
write a little script to killall beryl when u log into vnc

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2007 1:17pm
seeing as I only VNC in, what would the point of that be?

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 1:22pm

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 1:24pm
i dunno why u would want desktop effects on a comp u vnc into. how long do u spend on a session?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2007 1:33pm
how ever long I need

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 17,2007 1:35pm
why not just connect a monitor?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 17,2007 1:38pm
please find me a monitor that will be where ever I happen to be with my laptop at any given time. Seems to me that carrying around another monitor along with my laptop would be a pain. too bad there isn't some sort of magical way that I could view what my non-mobile linux box has on it's screen over some sort of magical wires-free method. you know what, they could just make a window on my laptop that I could see that on. now that would be cool!

I know that to you, that is something awesome

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 19,2007 4:13am
so im like 99.9% ready to install ubuntu... i was reading it cant detect my motorola wireless card unless i get the .inf and .sys file and ndiswrapper and even then there might be little issues with network being dropped after wake up or something... i kinda dont want to spend money on a wicked long ethernet cable but i want to install the OS now. i also suppose i can save the inf and sys file as ell as the tar for ndiswrapper to a USB flash memory stick or something and transfer it that way... but if that doesnt work i have no way to check the net to fix it after that... gayyyyyy

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 19,2007 8:11am
you aren't dual booting?

toggletoggle post by sxealex nli at Jul 19,2007 11:58am
everyone is all like we should use the same hd for a dual boot... i wonder why they dont just make a cable switch for these situations? 2 hds would be better cuz then u can seperate them in the future.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 19,2007 12:04pm
not practical. just install it on 2 different hard drives and use grub.

A hard drive switch would cause the HUGE problem of it being switch while the machine is running. Have you ever hot-swapped IDE? worst thing to do ever (unless you have a hot-swap case)

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 19,2007 12:24pm
there could just be a circut that wouldnt allow it to be hotswapped. grub is great and all but its so fucking buggy. and the language isnt clear. so when it wont configure itself ur fucked.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 19,2007 12:30pm
nah... i dont have much of a reason to dual boot. i found out the games i play can be run on linux through cedega so... yeah.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 19,2007 12:34pm
there are hot-swap holder things you can buy, but their interfaces are slow and non-upgradeable.

grub, milo, lilo all work awesome unless you mess something up and want to get rid of them. then you are fucked. no harder than MBR.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 19,2007 12:40pm
a few power outages totally messed up something on my system grag

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 20,2007 5:06pm
well... im making the absolute FINAL preparations needed to back up whatever i need to do to make the leap. i even have an xp pro cd waiting incase i cant hack it and need to go back to "the darkside". a dual boot would be great, but i kinda dont want to do it on a single HD. i DO have another HD i could possibly use, but how would i work it switching between the two?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 20,2007 5:09pm
use either physically switching them or (better) grub. ubuntu sets up grub automatically.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 20,2007 5:10pm
ORLY? i would have to make the linux HD boot up first or... whats the deal with that?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 20,2007 5:20pm
you can set that with grub

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 20,2007 5:24pm
dayum.... well then... time to install the other HD

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 20,2007 5:34pm
and ubuntu can see the ntfs (xp) drive. you'll probably have to mount it. xp won't be able to see the ubuntu drive, I don't think.

I had some issues with external drives in ubuntu.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 20,2007 6:32pm
ok... ubuntu installed on my spare 80 gig drive... load up the comp and it loads the XP drive only... so ummm... yeah

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 20,2007 6:56pm
did you set up grub when you installed it? it should ask you questions when it boots. I hope it's not gay like RH used to be with the whole "first 2.1GB"

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 20,2007 7:01pm
it didnt ask me anything when i installed it. other than which drive i want to install ubuntu to... does it make a difference that my 80 gig drive is an older "ribbon connector" style and the 200 gig one is a newer smaller connector style? also the 80 gig is set as slave other wise my cd drive wouldnt get recognized at all

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 20,2007 7:05pm
ide and sata.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 20,2007 7:09pm
ide i'm assuming is the older style that isnt really used anymore... well... since my whole comp is gutted i guess if i want to use linux i can just unplug the sata drive *shrug*... it's kinda what i wanted to avoid doing (manually switching between the two) but whatever... i'll figure something else out eventually...

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 21,2007 11:31am
if u have windows on master hd then it wont load grub cuz that hd still has MBR

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 21,2007 12:40pm
oh so they do still have those "issues" got it.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 21,2007 12:57pm
no one pays attention to bootloaders cuz programmers get it working then never have to see it again. so they don't work on it since it doesn't bug them

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 21,2007 12:57pm
thats my theory at least

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 21,2007 3:25pm
well i cant get ndiswrapper to install. i burned the tar to a disc along with the wireless card driver i need and extracted the tar through the gui, then i go into a terminal and change to the directory and do "make install" and it seems like it starting to work then it says "permission denied". i try to log into the root and there is no root command. i try "sudo" and what not... but no dice. i read that the install cd has ndiswrapper on it but when i search the packages, it isnt there. and sudo apt-cdrom add doesnt seem to be working like they said it would on the ubuntu forums.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 21,2007 4:05pm
if u want to make a root user type sudo psswd root
type yer desired password

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 21,2007 4:06pm
what kinda card u got?

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 22,2007 1:35am
i have a motorola wpci810g or whatever... i need ndiswrapper... i installed the 3 necessary packages for it, did ndiswrapper -i ~/driver/bcwml5.inf (or whatever) to install the driver then did ndiswrapper -l and it said "driver invalid!"... so... yeah... im pretty fucked. i need to acquire an ethernet cable thats about 50 ft to access the net on linux... but im broke. i mean... i have a ton of cables, but the range from 6-25 feet and wont reach.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 22,2007 1:36am
although i think i just remembered something i read about the default wireless driver thats installed with linux possibly getting in the wa of ndiswrapper working... man im so stupid... let me check and see if thats the problem.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 22,2007 3:27am
you should just do
sudo su
and not set a password for root.

toggletoggle post by sxealex nli at Jul 22,2007 2:19pm
it lets you do that??? weird. seems unsafe.

toggletoggle post by sxealex nli at Jul 22,2007 2:19pm
actually i guess not u still need the username to get in

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jul 22,2007 2:24pm
did everything i could... i even tried different driver sets that correspond with the ID number of the card... no dice. just gonna have to use a wired connection for now

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 22,2007 5:23pm
TRY THIS:
The .exe file downloaded from Motorola is a self-extracting .exe, and thus it can be opened on Linux using 'unzip'.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 22,2007 5:24pm
do everything else the way you did it before

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 22,2007 5:40pm

toggletoggle post by the_revealer at Jul 22,2007 10:42pm
Spauldino, have you installed build-essentials? You need to install that before you try installing ndiswrapper. It's on your Ubuntu CD.

*phoenix down*

so i decided to stop using Ubuntu for a bit to see if i really would miss it and i did so im using it again. im about to make my "permanent" switch to linux soon. im loading up cedega, transporting the rest of my music and games, and getting the ability to extract rars... although what i MIGHT do. is make the smaller HD xp and the big one Linux. do a switcheroo with them. but then i would have to reinstall everything and that might be too much for my lazy ass right now.
