if u think its good wanna link me to the company? I might have gotten a sweet gig but need a reliable webserver.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 3:37pm
depends what you want to do and how much you want to spend. I think my company has some $69/mo boxes available. I know that there are co-los for $50 at one place that seems reliable.
here is my company: http://www.theplanet.com/
Intel Celeron Series - 2.0+ Intel Celeron 2.0GHz+ 80GB Hard Drive 512 MB RAM $69.00

I wish I could get a p4 3GHZ with 2GB ram

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 3:38pm
and a 100Mbps netconnection.. and the CPU support for hyperthreading.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 3:39pm
I sent a link to a dude that left for the $50 colo.
he'll post here soon I'm sure.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 3:49pm
its gonna be like an ecommerce thing... they tell u to get the 200$/m ones for ecommerce but thats kinda nuts... its not gonna be like amazon or something. itll be like a medium size clothing company.

word

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 3:52pm
do they come preinstalled with something?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 3:52pm
I run their dedicated self management switch. it's on there for a base of $109, but if you want things added on, it's extra. In the end, I might switch to a P4 3GHz in a little while, but adding 1GB DDR2 costs you like $400. eep! I added a second hard drive a year or so ago and it was $300 to buy 80GB or $30/mo... after 11 or 12 months of playing $30 extra and sending them emails saying "take it out" and them replying "are you sure" and then me forgetting about it, they finally took it out.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 3:54pm
it would be so sweet if u could set up a computer and mail it to them.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 3:57pm
Clovertown - Quad Core Dual Intel Clovertown Quad Core Processors 8 x 300GB, 10K RPM SCSI/SAS Hard Drive & 2 x 73GB 15k RPM SCSI/SAS 8192 MB RAM $1,099.00 all right ill take 2

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 3:58pm
have em install a big video card and play video games via vnc hehehe

toggletoggle post by denim at Mar 21,2007 4:03pm
colo is $60 for most guys, $50 for LUG members. I recommend theplanet.com's $69/mo. deal.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 4:14pm
word thanks ill probably do that... what do they come installed with?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 4:17pm
RHE3 or 4. I suggest installing yum right away and then do a yum update against FC5, binaries.
you can pay like $25 and have other OS's installed. they might even offer that free on setup for bsd or something.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 4:24pm
hrmmm fc is fine. i have one of those books on it so i might keep it with the repositories they suggest. u just doing ssh? or do they have something else rigged?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 4:26pm
install whatever you want. I do ssh. I want to get xterm working so I can xterm with exceed hummingbird, but most people I've talke to either ssh, rlogin, or secure vnc over some weird port.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 4:28pm
I'm afraid that the management overhead for xterm (exporting display) might be high

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 4:55pm
xterm exports the display? i thought not doing that was the point of xterm vs vnc. just like x but rendered remotely? no?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 4:57pm
xterm is an exported display (hence the x at the beginning).
once you have an xterm running GUI things are exported to your machine.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 4:58pm
ok im definately thinking of something else since i have xterm open here... im dumb

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 5:09pm
no i was thinkin of this thing that why i mentioned vnc. nice i found a good link http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/

I had to call RedHat support yesterday at work. They told me "oh, RHEL5 can't do that, you should try FC5 or SUSE."

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 6:51pm
what's the L mean?
I don't dig on SUSE. don't like it at all.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 6:54pm
oh and alex, you should just get the $89 or $109 package and get some friends to pay a monthly fee for space/hosting..

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 6:56pm
i like it but i think shit is all moved around so itll make installing stuff harder. are they not on like redhat9 or 10?

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 6:57pm
L stands for linux.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 6:58pm
oh ok enterprise corresponds with the fedora numbers

What don't you like? It seems pretty good to me. I've never used it before today. Our problem with the new redhat is that the NCP shit wouldn't work. We needed to mount our netware shares into Linux. Suse is a little more Novell friendly. Who wuddathunkit?

vsftpd isn't working right with Suse though. I have to fuck with it more.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 7:07pm
novell? what decade is this?

alex: enterprise is usually 1 behind FC and RHE is only truly released items. no betas.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 7:08pm
im confused as to what support they provide that a tech dood couldnt get from the internet. it doesnt make sense to me when a place that does only computers gets the supported versions. couldnt they just fix the open versions? i get like bussiness that dont know shit... but when that is your job wouldnt it be worth saving the $

yea i get that... like opensuse is to suse.

but they have the non enterprise redhat thats on a higher version b4 fedora was seperated

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 21,2007 7:31pm
enterprise releases are very slow coming.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Mar 21,2007 7:37pm
they go as fast as fedora moves stability wise.

We have a couple of netware servers among the 20 at my work. Novell isn't nearly as bad as people think. Netware is very similar to Linux in how it operates and is rock solid (All the web-based shit uses Apache and Tomcat for netware, too).

Novell comes up with some impressive shit. I don't think they market it properly, though. It usually doesn't catch on and then 5 years later Microsoft just copies the idea and impliments it themselves successfully.
