nah, i've done those shows before at marks, its just a giant scam. they don't give a shit about the locals. all that place wants is their money and them to do all the leg work for the show.
but whatever, cause bands are going to keep doing it and nothing will change.
In an attempt to put a positive spin on this thread:
I look at selling tickets as cheaper admission to the show and strip club for our friends and fans. If we can't sell the tickets, we can't sell them. I know that if we dont draw or make an effort by promotion, then we are less likely to be asked back. It's in our interest to do good promotion and try to sell the tickets and draw...whether we are playing marks or not. Same rules apply for venues a 100 miles from marks. It's a pain in the ass, but you can't expect to be handed a packed venue. If you are, then someone further down the food chain worked hard to get it that way.
The concept of having bands draw from different areas sounds grand in the whole scheme of things, but discouraging for out of state bands. Most don't want to travel and its hard to sell a shitload of tickets, especially if you've never played the area before. It also helps with networking if the other bands playing have similar style, fan base, etc. and want to do shows in the future.
that whole "if we can, we can, if we can't, we can't" way of thinking would be fine if they didn't hold the minimum you have to sell over your head like a dagger. say they want you to sell 25 tix at 25 bucks, you dont sell 25 but you sell like 15 or something, they want you to still cough up the cash even though with 10000000000000 bands on the bill, they blatantly dont need that extra couple hundred your tossing at them.
The increase in bands is probably an attempt to lower the required number of tickets per band. With two stages, it breaks up the show quite a bit.... and if you dont like what's playing, there's always boobs to stare at next door.
well my take on these shows are good! everytime we play here there is always a packed club! We are always gaining new fans and always meeting new bands to network with!
Alot of people think paying to play is gay, in some cases it is if you have to sell 2000 tickets, but if you only have to sell 25-50 tickets then whats the big deal? So if you had 5 people in your band that means you have to sell only 10 tix each band member. Thats not hard at all!

a friend of mine told me acariya dropped off this show. they thought it was a dumb idea to have to front all the money for the tickets and have to sell them to people that live over 2 hours away from them.
Mark's sucks. I overheard talkingbout how all the bands that play there suck and how he's "eally cashing in on this one". My advice- Don't play there or do business with them
i don't have a problem with bernie or mark's, i just wish i didn't have to front money to play there. i really wanted to get on the enslaved show when it was booked, but i was still trying to sell tickets for the katatonia show and just didn't have the money. it will be more fun to go to that show and see friends' bands play with enslaved without getting stressed out about playing. it was hard to enjoy the katatonia show. good thing i went to the CT show the following month.
well...I gotta say, I do have more respect for Acariya. Even though they would probably benefit from a Diecast crowd.

i guess they dropped off the overkill show too. i guess they are serious about not paying to play.
