The vast majority of all mainstream metal after 1992 has sucked. 1996, however, was notable for making things even worse, with the introduction of Mediocrica and in particular the beginning of the Korn trend, the effects of which still pollute the airwaves today.

In the underground scene, though, there's always a bunch of good bands, even if they're scattered across the earth; it's just a matter of finding them.

1996 also had some amazing albums thought, Jester Race, Elegy, Passage...it was a great year in metal.

2006 is a huge year.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. Maybe it was just the way I was at the time, but metal used to really hold my attention. I don't know if it was better music, or just that it was newer to me then, but all these new bands just seem to be over-produced, and watered down.

I don't think it's overrated. I just think it sucks.
