LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actor-director Mel Gibson criticized the war in Iraq while promoting his new film "Apocalypto" at a Texas film festival.

Gibson, 50, drew parallels between the collapsing Mayan civilization depicted in the movie and the current situation in the United States, the Hollywood Reporter said Monday.

"The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again," Gibson said after the work-in-progress screening in Texas.

"What's human sacrifice if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?" he said.

Friday's surprise visit to the Fantastic Fest in Austin came more than a month after an attorney for Gibson entered a no contest plea for the actor to a charge of drunken driving in Malibu.

He made anti-Semitic remarks to the arresting deputy and later apologized.

At the screening, Gibson showed footage from his Mayan epic adventure and got a standing ovation when he took questions.

"Apocalypto" is scheduled to be released Dec. 8.
