Anthony there are cheesy lyrics in cannibal corpse's songs but they still are fucking killer. Belphegor is intense and the music and vocals are devastating. I look at myself as someone with a bit of knowlege in these issues after 11yrs of listening to this genre of music. GoatReich Fleshcult is there latest masterpiece and the new album comes out here in the states on October 31. I bet you $10 bucks I catch you banging your head for them!!! |

1. Get a good lineup together, with some local talent and headliners or just a great local lineup.
2. Book the proper-sized venue, you can't expect a lot of people for a black metal show in the US so you want something with the right atmosphere.
3. Don't promote it on flyers as a 'black metal' show, promote it as a metal show. Anyone with half a brain will realize by looking at the logos what kind of metal it is. Radio/newspapers do not have half a brain, therefor they will run it thinking it's rock or metal. |

I was also talking about the local openers being black metal bands.
If I had a show with international black and death bands I would: Get my show listing on every available forum/metal listing site, get in every concert listing for all area newspapers, flyer my ass off (doesn't really require that much manpower - a promoter and his friends if they actually go to shows regularly could do it no problem), sell tickets on Ticketmaster, put up flyers in every record store in the NE area (need friends to help with this), contact all local college radio shows that play metal/extreme music and get them to announce it on air. |

One of the problems is there are so many damn metal shows each doesn't really get the promotion it would have gotten a few years ago. Literally, a dozen metal shows a week or more. Maybe not all the 'quality' bands, but to the average metal fan, they don't discriminate that much. Quite insane. |

those are the obvious...college radio is definitely the best bet, other than that harder/faster would get it out there pretty decent but that's mainly a younger audience that's just getting into metal as far as i can tell. as far as the flyering, it really is manpower...believe me if there's only one person going out and handing shit out it's not gonna be nearly as effective as you think it might be(unless you get to some really packed shows and unload like 500 of em in one place) |

I agree. But even with all locals if you put together a show that makes sense and make it sound appealing to people, it can be very successful. You just have to have a sense that you are creating an event, not just throwing together some bands at a bar and then being lazy about promoting it. |

Well, I just meant overall. I mean there aren't a dozen thrash, black, death, power, speed metal shows/week, but I'm including all the other stuff (metalcore, grind, doom, stoner rock, etc), and usually there are multiple choices every night on the Events page. |

Well they are obvious because they work. It's not like you can cast some magic spell to make shit succeed, you just plug away and do what it takes.
I have no problem handing out flyers at shows by myself. It takes longer to get everyone a flyer, but it's do-able. If it's a problem, just ask some people you know at the show to help for 5 minutes.

Aye, and that's definitely true. Some events are mandatory because they have a great lineup that just can't be beat.
But in general the wealth of shows does split the crowds, I've seen many shows where just having 20-30 more people would make all the difference. Everyone has a right to play though, and everyone wants to play and book shows, so nothing can really be done about this. It'll balance out again one day when the metal popularity dies down like it did in the 90s. |

nor do i...i was talking abot covering a lot of ground(hitting up record stores, convenience stores, flagpoles, etc.) in different towns and cities...that's where you need many people doing it
anyhow...i'm just going to reiterate that this show could do a lot better in MA at an all ages venue

the only problem i've found with that is that it's usually inefficient to flyer more than 15 miles away from where the show is(most people don't travel that far for local shows unless it's ridiculously awesome)

I agree about the distance thing. The good thing about having flyers up around here is that it is a hub and alot of people who don't live here come here. It can't hurt to get up as many flyers as possible though, there are definitely people who will drive out of their way.
As for the collaboration, that sounds good and I am definitely down. I am trying to cool it a little bit on the local booking right now, as I have a few shows in the works and my plate is full. Maybe in a few months? Let me know any ideas you have. |

i hadn't planned on doing shows anytime soon myself...i still need to get a little more grounded in the money department before i can make any investments, i'll probably just do local clubs and such so i don't have to pay anything out of pocket for the time being
i want to try and book some national bands though, and throw some bigger local names on with a couple newer bands that just kick ass \m/ |

out of those bands, zircon will motivate people to go and I know there will be more people there to see zircon than an obscure band from 15 years ago that people forgot about and a kvlt band from austria.
now, in terms of draw, let's look at the local bands:
CNV: I personally would put them on before zircon, but this gives you not much more in draw since all CNV's friends/members would come anyhow to drink and see the headliners.
witchtomb: would be awesome, but no draw. plus, the sound system at mark's did them no justice last show.
godless rising: awesome, but getting mass fans up to NH, especially immigrant ones, would be hard.
I'm drawing a blank on other bands right now that would fit. |

The next one live was ok and the victory was a little slower and less brutal, but good metal and then another live one. Warrior was good, but not like the first couple and then Hells and Sworn are good revivals of early day unleashed and they are one of my all time Death/Doomy metal bands with a mix of fast, melodic and brutal music. |

I completely agree with you. Zircon doesn't sound anything like Dimmu Borgir. Like I said in another thread where this same anonymous person (who seems to be posting in EVERY thread relating to Zircon) wrote essentially the same thing: It would be difficult for any band to sound like Dimmu Borgir without a keyboard player. |
