guitar center is selling a marshall mg100hdfx with cab for 699.99 do you guys think that is a good deal?
or should i just get something like a mesa

toggletoggle post by whiskey_weed_and_women  at Jul 4,2006 3:52pm
first of all this question should be possed towards the GC Masta, but i dont know where Blue is so just wait for him to respond.

toggletoggle post by blue nli at Jul 4,2006 3:53pm
LOL.

you realized you just asked the question of, 'should i buy one of the worst amps ever created, or should i buy something light years ahead of it?'

toggletoggle post by blue nli at Jul 4,2006 3:57pm
seriously though.

the marshall MG series is by far one of the worst sounding amps iv ever heard.

if youd actually want to get something like a mesa, youd probably be looking at at least a grand more than the marshall stuff.

save yourself money, buy used.

EBAY THAT SHIT NUCCA !!!!!!!!!!

toggletoggle post by ethos   at Jul 4,2006 4:21pm
For that price you could get a Crate GT1200H, a FULL stack, and is the best you'll get for the price.

Either that, or buy used.

blue you work at gc right? can you hook me up on a deal with a decent amp?

toggletoggle post by Kinslayer at Jul 4,2006 4:33pm
both Blue and I work at GC Boston and can hook you up...
If you want a halfway decent head w/ out breaking the bank you may consider this used Peavey XXL...

I'd save my $$ and get something tube though.

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jul 4,2006 4:34pm
you and blue need to find me a blockhead 5150!!!!

toggletoggle post by sinistas   at Jul 4,2006 4:37pm
used Carvin MTS 3200 and a 412. that's all I'm sayin'.

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jul 4,2006 4:43pm
thanks guys... what cab would you suggest to go with the xxl?

toggletoggle post by Kinslayer at Jul 4,2006 5:05pm
I have a block letter EVH 5150 of my own but I'll never get rid of that!

I'd grab a Mesa cab as they are the best cabs EVER but unfortunately we can't discount Mesa/Boogie shit so you'll have to pay the full $849 for it.

If you want a decent cheap cab you may consider Marshall AVT cabs or some of the 'higher' end Crate cabs...

if you can find a 6505 used, theyre identical to block letter specs.

Peavey amps create the shittiest dryest pinch harmonics I've ever heard. The distortions good on them except for being inarticulate.

I don't even really like mesas that much for the same reason. better distortion than the peaveys, but still dry pinches. also really inarticulate. they sound messy.

Than again, I play Crates and people have plenty to say about them too.

hmmm your right... but having never heard this amp before the marshall.. to quote the guitar center catalogue "when you need the kind of power that grabs your audience by the throat only the sound of a 100-watt marshall head pushing a 4x12 cab will do. now with the mg100hdfx half stack that signature roar can be yours at a working musicians price, with the added bonus of on board effects like delay chorus flanger and reverb"

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jul 4,2006 6:10pm
i asked this question because of the gc book i got in the mail....

depends on which peaveys, imo. the xxx is my least favorite head they have in production. i definetly have no problem with getting nice fluid pinch harmonics out of my 5150 II.

boosting mine with a modded tubescreamer certainly helps, too. a lot of people seem to overlook boosting their amps, i find that it tightens up things very well.

mesas for the most part dont impress me too much, besides the mark series although im quite interested in the new stiletto aces.

i think a general rule of common sense, you shouldnt believe marketing propaganda. i think that goes without saying.

i trust 2 different opinions as far as gear is concerned:

1. my own
2. ones of musicians whose opinions i value and trust

and i trust your opinion compaired to some ad....
do they still make the 5150's or 5150 II?

toggletoggle post by Kinslayer at Jul 4,2006 6:26pm
5150 II yes...you can get an original 5150 on ebay for $400-$600 though.

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jul 4,2006 6:26pm
I really like when people start modding 5150's. They start to sound amazing. Other than these my fav amps are engl's.

they are getting harder and harder to find and the price is on the rise like crazy for 5150's. I want to get one before people start asking like 1k for them. I see some in good shape going for 800, modded ones going for a grand, and beat ones going for 500 these days. Right now there is only ONE on ebay and the thing was spray painted.

FJA modded amps sound killer. Ed Gein runs his clarity and bias mod on the 5150 grahm uses and it sounds great live. I played a few tripple channel FJA 5150's and I have nothing but good to say about them.

i recently got the Peavey JSX Satriani and it is Boss!!!! seriously, best sounding amp from peavey! I got mine for 1200 but i don't know what the list is.

I am a Mesa advocate.
Great sound for me, and quality built.

The only con is they are fucking HEAVY!!!

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Jul 4,2006 11:22pm
5150 II would be my second choice.

I'm actually pretty sure that it's FJA JCM's...that's what FJA posted on harmony-central at least.

yeah, I'll agree with that Dan. that head sounds killer. maybe eventually I'll get one of those (or maybe a 5150II or 6505+) I haven't decided yet, but first on my agenda is new cabnets.

Blue, any reccomendations on cabnets that won't cost me an arm and a leg and my first born? (keep in mind that I like my tone crunchy and tight, and I'm not a fan of Mesa, because IMO, they're too bassy)

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Jul 5,2006 8:48am
They are a bit bassy, but they are also crunchy and tight, and if you turn your bass down a tad, voila!!

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Jul 5,2006 9:28am
True kok, I do respect Mesa for making quality stuff, it's not what I'm looking for. I'm more of a Marshall/VHT cabnet kinda guy. I prefer a more mid/high tone, and I leave the low end to bass (and synth/piano in my case)
