I'll agree with xmikex, but unless you'r eon a Mac, neither of those solutions will work for you

Avid is available on PC. In fact when you mailorder Xpress DV they send you both Mac and PC formats.

is it? I was not aware of that. I don't do much video editing, so that's probably why I had no clue

for short videos with not too many effect Windows Movie Maker can actually do some pretty decent stuff. Just make sure to get version 2 if you have SP2

only bad thing about windows movie is you can only render/export as some weird windows files, and cant open to edit it in another editing proggy.

I just figured out the hard way, that the best converter so far is Nero, and I tried EVERYTHING.
I have a dvd handycam, so I have to go right from dvd to convert formats, thus, pain in the ass samplerates, bit depths, fps, all that other annoying shit.
All the progs either only did video or audio, not both, or it would do both and studder, or do great vid, but shitty clipping audio...

check: http://www.drippingdead.com to see some super duper compositing. Also I would highly recommend all apple with Final Cut Studio / Shake and Silhoutte FX if you are serious about editing..

if not and its just for fun.. stick with premiere and or sony vegas

Avid is bucks but kicks ass for both windows and apple platforms. I dont know if Avid has released a universal binary for OSx as ot yet.
