New site? Maybe some day.
|
I just saw a news story on MSNBC about 6/6/06 and how it's being marketed. The story began with a clip of the song Number of the Beast by Maiden, and later mentioned Slayer's new album coming out on that day. It was interesting to see two back-to-back metal references in the mainstream news so I thought I'd mention it...
|
|
haha the marketing behind 666
wasn't there some big story last year about how 666 actually isn't the number of the beast since it was mistranslated(i don't believe anything anyone says about ancient times because everything is in some way mistranslated) |
|
Yup, just like how Christmas is supposed to be in spring, but since pagans celebrated in late December, early Christians decided to go with the flow. That's a basic tenant of all religion: when the truth is too hard to adjust to, settle for what's convenient and just rewrite history. If mortality is too hard to comprehend, have an afterlife. If existentialist isolation is too much to bear, have a god.
As far as we know, 666 was just read upside down initially. Although, "9....9..9!" wouldn't have had the same impact as a Maiden song; it would have had to be sung by a German band to sound evil.

i'd rather hear 222

Don't feel bad... I just realized my original joke about nine sounding evil in German is retarded, because nine actually means no in German. |
|
I saw some documentary were they said the number 666 has something to do with Augustus Ceasar because christians believed he was the Antichrist. He killed more Christians than anyone in history. |
|
Yep. The number 666 in the bible was likely meant to refer to the Roman Empire. Period. That's it. Sorry folks!
Everything else is just urban legend and faux-Satanism.
And a hell of a lot of fun! |
|
wrong.
The number 666 in the bible was a direct reference to the "mark" that would identify those whom would be first for execution by Christ during the apocalypse, as told by the prophet in the book of revelations.
Last year it was discovered that it was likely a mistranslation, and that the numeric value origionally referenced was in fact "616" or "618"
|
|
^ spelled originally wrong |
|
yeah... because they didnt really have the arabic numerics like we do now WAYYYYY back in the Jesus days (as i call them) |
|
There were no arabic numbers in the bible. However, at the time that the Old Testament was culled from the original hebrew books arabic numerals WERE in existance, therefore some translations did feature them at the time. |

That is but one interpretation of the text, especially since, as you say, the number itself is in contention. The text that you quote is not even the first example of the number in the Bible, but a New Testament add-on.
Old Testament, II Chronicles Verse 9:13 "Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold".
Also a reference to the number of children of Adonikam was 666 in Ezra, and 667 in Nehemiah.
Clearly this is a code. Many scholars believe it is a code specifically referring to Nero. It certainly wouldn't be the only cryptic case of hogwash and allegory hidden within the Bible. The Catholic Church itself supports the Nero theory.
Fascinating stuff.

its funny how that in the omen (the new one and im guessing the original)... damien has "the number of the beast" on him... which are 3 arabic numeral 6's. which is fucking bullshit because if all this shit is true then the OLDER way of writing numerics would be the brand on Damien... not the newer way. granted no one knows how they wrote numbers back then... but still. |

This is assumptive.
The bible, like most, is filled with patterns, and symbolic numbers. It's not neccesarily a code to anything. Look how many times the number 40 comes up, or 12.
Any significant code, if one even existed (which gives the authors far more credit than I feel they deserve), would be impossible to detect anyways. The modern day bible is a handful of writings taken from resource of over 300 collected writings. Add in the dead sea scrolls, mormon writings, etc... and we're not even getting a LITTLE of the picture. |
