i replaced my company name with "BLAH BLAH"
~~~
Earlier this month, representatives of the entertainment industry filed lawsuits accusing 261 people of illegally sharing copyrighted music, including 46 individuals in the Boston area. Many of the defendants were children, or parents who had allowed their children unsupervised access to a computer. Some defendants were asked to pay millions of dollars in damages. The industry says it plans to file many more suits.
These lawsuits demonstrate that the internet is not anonymous. Copyright violators are now being found, identified and prosecuted.
Making, storing, or transmitting an unauthorized copy of any copyright work, such as music, movies or software, is an illegal act. Sharing copies over a peer-to-peer file transfer service, either as an offeror or as a receiver, is also an illegal copyright infringement unless the site is officially authorized by the owner of the work. A single copy of a work, even if obtained legitimately, cannot be legally copied or distributed. The law allows damages of up to $150,000 per violation. Each illegally downloaded or copied work is considered a separate violation.
BLAH BLAH expects all of its employees to act ethically, honestly and in compliance with the law in accessing, downloading or transferring information through the BLAH BLAH network. Specifically, in accordance with BLAH BLAH’s Internet Use policy, BLAH BLAH internet resources cannot be used for personal downloading of copyrighted materials by you or your family members. Furthermore, pursuant to BLAH BLAH’s Electronic Mail policy, BLAH BLAH e-mail systems cannot be used to share personal downloads of copyrighted materials with others. See http://www.xxxxx.asp and http://www.xxxxxxx/policies/is/sys_res/internet.asp for more information.
Please do not place yourself or BLAH BLAH in legal jeopardy by violating the copyright laws.
Please contact me or one of the attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel if you have any questions about this matter. Thank you.
hah!
I hope they don't catch me and sue me for having my 147 mp3s, most of which I got off either official band websites or mp3.com. ~~shakes in his boots~~
damnit, they are scaring people away from file sharing and its probably working well too. I can't decide if its good or not. might be good because it will take the heat off of us who still do it, or it might be bad and more isp's might partake in prosecuting.
im not getting rid of my mp3's period. its the industries fault they are in a downward spiral, first producing and marketing absolute horseshit CDs with one good song per CD, then they charge us 15.99, then they start prosecuting thier old customers because we turned our back on them... I'm hopefully awaiting some sort of nation-wide Cd buying boycott
