my friends and I are trying to come up with some classic thrash bands from 1986-1994. can ya list some? Looking for some obscure ones.

An example how about this band Confessor? Back in 1991 they put out a killer album that was technical and weird. Can't find it anymore but i see they are back together and released something new? anyone have it?

oh and anyone remember that NJ band Blood Feast? Chopping Block Blues!

Gotta check out Razor (from Canada), and oh,shit, I could go on for days being the old geezer I am...I'll be selling a lot of classic and obscure hardcore and thrash metal from the 80's on cassette soon. I'll post when the sale is organized. Hell, I used to play Blood Feast on my radio show!!!

check out forbidden if you haven't heard them already; awesome thrash band

toggletoggle post by wacko at Jan 12,2006 12:14pm
yeah twisted into form, i have the old CD, haven't listened to it in at least 12 years. wow.

hey ichabod name some cool obscure thrash acts. i'm really into the stuff from the late 80's early 90's that no one gave a chance because the grunge scene took over.

I can't account for this guy's tastes (or anyone who would give Artillery "By Inheritance" a mediocre score), but check out:

http://www.classicthrash.com

He has some reviews and notes about a whole bunch of obscure bands from the time period you are looking for.

You could also look through my music list, I write very short (and sometimes funny) blurbs for each CD, although you'll have to fish through to find the thrash stuff.

http://www.geocities.com/otterwaldi/music.html

Hope those help get you started, there are 100s of bands worth checking out that match the description you are looking for.

Two of the best thrash albums ever, both extremly technical and far beyond their time (and riffwise, ahead of our own time).

Deathrow - Deception Ignored (1989)
Artillery - By Inheritance (1990)

Some of my favorite metal ever.

awesome! thanks guys.

I hear a lot about TANKARD, what are they like?

Defiance Void Terra Ferma, yup use to own that CD and I actually didn't think they were that great.

I also had a tape back in the day by Assassin Interstellar something. I just remember they crushed. Also a band from Britain called Virus weren't bad, another tape I have. ANACRUSIS i wanted to like but never got into them...

Keep em coming and yeah someone has suggested Artillery's By Inheritance to me. Heard of them but never checked them out back then.

that classicthrash.com is a really cool page. pretty informative.

why did chopping block bite? that was the only one i had i think and i remember lovin it. Lyrics sucked big time but musically the drumming was pretty cool... i may have had an older tape from one of their shows from back in the day but i'm sure its long gone...

Aggression The Full Treatment was a cool tape but I remember the recording wasn't as good. Canadian thrash!

For bands that haven't been listed yet

Death Strike (death/thrash with member of Master)
Exorcist (black metal style lyrics and vocals with thrash music)
Fastkill (Kreator styled)
Gammacide (fast thrash)
Mace ( Heavy metal/power metal/punk/ thrash)
Wehrmacht (Crossover)
Num Skull (black/death styled thrash)
Onslaught (black/death thrash)
Sadus (sorta Kreator styled)

That's all I can think of on the top of my head besides the ones that everybody knows. I have a bunch of other thrash cds but I don't feel like going through my whole collection right now.

Exorcist is really amazing, especially because it's the guy from Virgin Steele who actually finished that record.

I'm not really a fan of Wehrmacht, they are a terrible band and Tankard are similar and far better musically. All the others Dissector listed are cool though.

It was probably Face Fate then. That one shreds.

and also some of the best thrash I've ever heard came from an old punk band, English Dogs. Check out:

English Dogs - Forward Into Battle
English Dogs - Where Legend Began
English Dogs - Metalmorphosis

They used to be a punk band then changed full out metal. Not even corssover hardcore metal stuff.

DAMN, i bought that tape at a show they played at back in 1990 when i was in 9th grade! I no longer have it, but i do remember it only had 4 songs. Then I bought that Chopping Block Blues CD shortly after. maybe i'll try to search for that on P2P if possible. I know its been long OOP

Blood Feast - Face Fate for $10 and ya only get 4 songs but I'm very curious to hear what "they use to" sound like pre Chopping Block Blues

Anacrusis first album is good minus the HORRIBLE vocals.

Bathory wasn't very good either but to each his own.

Artillery was AWESOME!!!! The album By Inheritance is well worth the over price cost of say $40! I've seen that CD go for $60 on ebay! And people buy it!!! So if you got yours for $8 may I suggest you flip that shit and make some ched!

Speaking of the Limeys, how about Onslaught? Not-quite-thrash U.S. notables Obsession (Scarred for Life, Marshall Law, etc.) were pretty talented chaps too, saw 'em at Narcissus/Celebration in Boston. My favorite for creating an atmosphere is "The Return" by Bathory...so fucking menacing, even with the shitty production and horrible Rockman guitar sound. It's shittiness creates such an apocolyptic vibe.

Onslaughts records were great, and so was Bathory "The Return". "Blood Fire Death" isn't so much a thrash record as a Viking metal/black metal prototype, but their first three albums were all out black thrash.

Every year at Umass some guy brought a ton of used CDs to the school fair. I remember one year he had tons of old Roadrunner/Roadracer stuff so I cleared him out and threw away my old cassette copies. About $50 for 13 CDs. Atrophy, Realm, Holy Terror, etc, "Endless War" was with those.

to the list of classic thrash. i think they were a good tech thrash almost death metal style band...

toggletoggle post by anonymous at Jan 17,2006 9:19am
yes Invocator Weave was the best one they put out.

if i may. do not buy out of print or rare thrash cds on eBay. There is a scam going on where groups of people are jacking the price up so that the real person that will do anything to get it pays a rediculus cost. Not saying all auctions are like this but I've been warned and I see it.

Check out:
http://shopping.theendrecords.com/

they have a lot of these cds at normal price. for example there was a link above for Devastation "Idolarty" for $50+shipping. If you go to The End Records they have 4 cds NEW left for a mere $11.50+shipping. I already ordered one and its on its way.

Another is Artillery. Yes this is long OOP but if you search you'll find some people selling it for $20. Not $100. Which is totally idiotic!!!

Just sayin if you are really into some of this stuff you should seek them out somewhere else other than scamBAY.

OR mp3sugar.com - you can "rent" the song for the day. and during that 24hrs you can save them... that's where i got Artillery tonight!

toggletoggle post by wacko at Jan 18,2006 8:46am
mp3 sugar has Artillery for $0.89 for the whole album in 192kbps. not a bad deal. but i still got my used copy for $8 so... not $100! that is a scam!

toggletoggle post by wacko at Jan 18,2006 8:50am
and what is the idea with the guy on eBay selling Devastation for $49 when you can order it for $12? am i missing something? does he have it wrong?

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at Jan 18,2006 10:25am
You could get all three Devastation CDs for less than $49.

Duh. I forgot yet another. SUICIDAL TENDENCIES!!!!

toggletoggle post by oldschool at Jan 24,2006 9:40am
ST! hahaha. The best CD of all time is How will I laugh! awesome! "Think somethin funny? Laugh at this!" that riff drove people crazy. Too bad today they don't draw anyone anymore.

Blood Feast Chopping Block is horrible. Slayer wannabe band and the vocals are horrible! Ok, Hunted Stalked and Slain is the only good song on that CD. They were really not a very good band.

Xentrix was horrible as well. Metalliclones!

Evildead Annialation is a classic. Black Flag cover song with the "Institutionalized" riff at the end, awesome! "Bend over here it comes again!" hahahahaha

Hey Man,

I'm was the lead singer in TIPPER GORE from R.I. We used to play out with Candy Striper Death Orgy all the time.

I remember we played an awesome all-day show up with you guys up in New Hampshire with Nuclear Assault, Melaiah, Wargasm and a shit-load of other bands. Me and the bass player in Gore, John Labbe, got caught by the N.H. cops drinking Budweiser out of McDonald's "New Kids on the Block" novelty cups out on the boardwalk in front of the theater -- and they threw us in the drunk tank for a few hours. Our guitarist convinced the cops to let us out of the slammer just in time for the show. Strangely enough, we shredded that night. The true metalness of rushing from the jailhouse to the stage made for some serious aggressive energy.

Thanks for adding our humble band to your pantheon of classic thrash.

Horns up,

Todd "Todd Gore" Carey

TIPPERGORE (1988-1994)

Just buy all the "Angels"... Dark Angel, Iron Angel, the first Death Angel (the ultra violence), the first Morbid Angel demo (abominations of desolation), etc.

german metallica wannabe's VENDETTA Braindamage. incredible CD. Assorted Heap was good. There were so many bands from that 1988-1992 era before grunge pushed all that away. Cerebral Fix was H O R R I B L E! I don't even consider them thrash. They were an Obituary Clone Band. horrible stuff. waste of time!

toggletoggle post by ihateKSE at Feb 8,2006 9:21am
NUM SKULL remember them!!!!

mall metal sux, do any bands such as Trivium even know a single true thrash metal band from back in the day? i doubt it.

toggletoggle post by mimee at Feb 9,2006 11:24am
numskull was not bad but the vocals were the downside. one of those bands where you wished the vocals were different cause the music was so good. accuser was a cool german band. Virus from UK was decent.
