I've got a little over 100 dollars that I want to spend on an effects pedal. Is the Boss MT 2 worth the money I'm about to blow on it?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Dec 7,2005 8:57pm
I was suggested this...

but I'm getting the rack version since I'll be switching to rack eventually

it's not distortion but it makes your current distortion rip a little harder

Those boss pedals are the worst most plastic overdriven solid-state sounding pieces of crap I've ever used. They sound so nifty in your bedroom when you're all turned down low, but once you turn them up they suck all the life out of your mids, no matter what the setting. It's also such a horribly plastic distortion sound, it completely dissapears in a mix.

If you want plastic, get the new line6 modeled distortion stomp. It's $139, and it'll sound just like the boss pedal, as well as a SLEW of others.

I reccomend the same towards the BBE unit. They make everything sound GREAT because it's such a dramatic difference at first. However, after a while it sucks out your soul.

The HM pedals and the bbe's are both geared towards giving you that "off the record" sound, polished and shiny. However when you take that and try to polish it more in the studio or at the soundboard, it ends up sounding like crap.

Final word: If you don't like your distortion, you more than likely need an EQ more than a new distortion.

at the moment I use a TB212R amp, and the distortion is fine. great, even, but for whatever reason its very quiet compared to the clean channel and I often have to turn the volume on the distortion up almost all the way to hear it over the drums. I'm just looking for decent distortion I can put on the clean channel as a substitution, and to run through the dd6 delay I'm getting. I'd shoot for the more expensive and good things, but I'm jobless.

What is a tb212r amp?

toggletoggle post by sever at Dec 7,2005 9:22pm
ibanez toneblaster 100w 2x12 with reverb.

More expensive isn't neccesarily better. I recorded all the guitars and basses on this with a $99 guitarport direct into my computer.

Those line 6 pedals are pretty sick. Some people don't like them because they sound so plastic and solid state, but you've already expressed interest in a pedal like that. It's worth the extra $39 to get the distortion pedal.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead nli at Dec 7,2005 9:26pm
By the way, pretty sick how I managed to plug my powermetal shit there, eh?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Dec 7,2005 9:35pm
haha...nice, love the pirate metal

I noticed that about the BBE, that it does suck out mids...but you can compensate with the preamp a little bit and it still gives you a boost.

Blue showed off his new 362 to me and I was sold...picking it up soon

I think the Metal Zone is by far the best distortion pedal ever made however; NOTHING tops a nice tube head...

If you're really broke and just want something to fuck around at home with then go for the Metal Zone but if you're serious about your shit and plan on playing live, recording etc etc then save your $$ and buy a nice tube head.

Pretty sure it's the soldano head with the ibanes tube screamer in front of it. Little compression on it.

i don't know where you are, but if you're close to providence, i've got quite a few i don't use anymore. you're more than welcome to try them out, i'll give you a good deal if you like one.

i use a metal zone through an ibanez tone blaster half stack(i run it mono...it seems to sound better that way). it has a very powerful clean channel so the metal zone has a nice set of testicles to it. i tend to keep the distortion about half level and scoop the distortion on the pedal a lot(gotta keep some mids in there), and have a slight scoop on the clean channel on the amp with the gain a little over half way up.

in the studio we did a layer with that setup, and a layer with a peavey 5150 with low distortion on it. they came out to be a pretty good mix that gave a nice thickness to the guitars they wouldn't have had with just the metal zone

i've played it through marshalls before though, and have it sound like total ass...so i'd say just go with your ears and your gut...whatever works best for you(it also doesn't hurt to go into a store and try out everything they have)

come to think of it, wasn't the 362 replaced by the 862i?

or do they still make the 362?

nevermind, I just looked it up

metal zone kinda sucks. if you're going after a distortion pedal check out the Jeckyl and Hyde or a tube screamer. Electro Harmonix makes really nice tube pedals as well.

i would say a tubescreamer as well, although it depends on what sound he's going for. you won't get that modern high-gain super compressed distortion. but if you overdrive the clean channel slightly, and put a tubescreamer in front of that, you'll get a nice creamy organic distortion...a cheap way to (roughly) simulate a nice 70's tube amp sound.

toggletoggle post by diamond nli at Dec 8,2005 2:42pm
by the way, if anyone wants to buy a metalzone, i have one for $50, i also have a Korg Toneworks distortion pedal (not a multieffects piece of crap, only distortion). It's a pretty sweet pedal with a bunch of neat features...used to sell for $250 (they don't make them anymore); i'll let mine go for $100 o/b/o.

i think anyone of the digitech distortion or the line 6 would be great... they have a metal zone setting as well as the electro harmonix..... ect
