windows media and quick time won't play .asf or .avi videos....any suggestions?

I know for a fact, that windows media DOES play both of those files, but maybe its an issue with that comp having the default player blah blah blah.....
I like PowerDVD, and I think its still free on the net somewhere.
I use wmp all the time.
