New site? Maybe some day.
I know I already asked this in another thread, but I'm bored, so I'm starting this for some more suggestions.
I'll be running a Marshall JMP-1 into the power amp I eventually buy. Some specific questions:
1) Should I go with tube or solid state? Does it really matter?
2) How much wattage should I look for?
3) Any specific brands? (Engl's been suggested already but I don't know what to make of it)
Those are the only questions I can think of.
Any help would be great. |

TUBE.
100w
if you have a lot of money, go VHT/ENGL.
if you don't, go MESA/MARSHALL. |
Tube. Yes it really matters. Big time.
Id say at least 150 watts, but I like it loud.
engl/mesa would be my choices.
Also....get a pink 'jackhammer jesus' |
It sucks that nobody in massachusetts sells engl amps. I'd like to try them out. |
i have a qcs and it fucking rocks my ass off!!!!
dude 300 bucks 400 watts! fucking loud as hell. actually, mark can't keep up with me volume wise, he's always mad that his peavey won't keep up! |
they have a tubed marshall power amp at guitar workshop in salem for 2000+

btw, that engl poweramp is $1600 |

You don't need anything more then 100 watts. if you do a Marshall 50/50 or 100/100, or a Mesa Two-50 or Tw0-Ninety, that's more then enough power. You shouldn't need a 300 watt cabnet. if you have a 100 or 120 watt cab, that's peak power, RMS should be around 50~65 watts, and will be louder then sin. I have learned the hard way that cheap equipment sucks, I've got a cheap ass Peavey 412 and a cheap ass peavey 260 watt poweramp, and it sounds bad (not like complete shit, but I know with a better power amp and cabnet I'll sound better.).
Keep that in mind and the next time some dipstick at daddys tries to sell you a 300 watt cabnet, tell 'em no
That concludes lesson one of Poweramps 101 |

unless it's a marshall 1960... great cabs for the price, and suprisingly a 1960a sounds really good with my engl. I do plan on buying an additional cab eventually, maybe VHT.
lol ha ha ha, i am pretty fucking happy with my sound man, you don't hear me complaining. though i would like the marshall tube pa. |

I'll head out to guitar center at some point. |
Just plug your fuckin cock into the JMP-1 Pat.
That fucker's packing like 500 watts easy. |
Wattage does NOT dictate volume. a 50 watt buddha head with 2 12s can compete with a recto as far as volume goes and kick it's ass as far as tone goes.
What you want is a tube AMP with an option for low impedance (4 or two ohms incase you want to hook more than 2 cabs up to it) and a high SPL of AT LEAST 110. SPL dictates volume, wattage does not. Also you want to check out wich amps you can turn up to high volumes (at least 75%)wichout having to deal with to much feedback. With the right guitar, cab, and settings, I've seen rectos turned up to 100% without any feedback.
Check out the VHT pitbull, Tripple recto, stiletto, cobra, basically anything by diezel, maybe even the blue voodoo.
Given your price range, your probably limited to Peavy, really low end marshalls, and b52. I would normally avoid buying a peavy amp, but in your price range, you can pickup the XXL for under 600$ I would personally check out the Crate GT3500H head. It's an all tube 350W head for about 550-600$
Remember kids, higher wattage means higher electric bill, not higher volume. |

Yes, but a REAL Marshall 1960's cabnet is loaded typically with Celestion Greenbacks, which are 25 watt speakers, designed to be loud without breaking the bank for power consumption. the "re-issues" sounds great, but I prefer the Marshall 412MG a&b cabs (the compact 412's that run @ 100 watts) they're tight and punchy with great pesence and resonance. but, again, this is merely MY opinion, so if you don't like it, you can form your own, you are entitled to that! :P |
I was just pointing out that typically you'd think a cheaper cab like the 1960 wouldn't be able to hold up against a 'boutique' amp and sound as good as it should. It really sounds pretty damn good. I prefer the headroom of the GT75's, with those in the cab it handles low end very well as well as highs without sounding tiny.
Niccolai is right, wattage doesn't mean shit if you're using tube amps. A 100w tube amp can sound louder than a 300w solid state amp. Just because you have a 500w amp doesn't mean it sounds good at all. Tube amps 'trick' the human ear into sounding louder due to the sound breaking up slower than a solid state. 95% of solid state amps just don't have as good tone as a tube amp. |
try this bad boy out maybe. a 100 watt all tube power amp for 500 bucks. not a bad deal if you ask me. |

mmmm... shiny |
just took my engl to the amp tech. :( I will be sad until I get it back re-tubed. |
what are you putting in it? |
please don't say groovetubes... they're so nu-metal |
Hooker said: what are you putting in it? |
all JJ's (6L6GC's, ECC83's) from Bob at eurotubes. He 'premium graded' the preamp tubes for high gain. Hopefully it still sounds good |
good man. jjs are my choice as far as tubes go. |
dreaminginexile said: please don't say groovetubes... they're so nu-metal |
nope, but I do have GT's in my marshall ;)
I was going to get SED 6L6's for my engl, but I figured I'd see the hype behind the JJ's everyone is always yapping about. |
You use GTs? Do you bias them hot? and how far? |
Niccolai said: You use GTs? Do you bias them hot? and how far? |
E34's in my dsl100 yes. I got them biased not quite hot, middle ground. I'm not sure exactly what # they were biased to. |
hey blue, have you heard that power amp before? I know a few people tha tlove Carvin equip, and I need to get rid of my POS peavey power amp. $500 for a tube amp is a sweet deal |
you can also see the new OT I had to get put in which had to be mounted differently. It sounds better with that than it did with the old transformer. |
