Tim Thomas Confirms 1-Year Hiatus from NHL on Facebook

Just a year after winning the Stanley Cup, Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas has taken to his Facebook to reportedly confirm the rumors that he would sit out next season.

WABI sports anchor Nick Coit is confirming the report.

After years of fighting to make it to the big show of the NHL, Thomas can now walk away for a season as a legend in Bruins lore.

Whether he comes back after the year off is another story.

Thomas posted the following on his Facebook page Sunday afternoon:

At the age of 38, I believe it is time to put my time and energies into those areas and relationships that I have neglected. That is why at this time I feel the most important thing I can do in my life is to reconnect with the three F's.

Friends, Family, and Faith.

This is what I plan on doing over the course of the next year.

While there had been rumors circulating for a while now, the confirmation brings closure to a franchise ready to turn the page. This is a new generation in Boston, and everyone’s ready to move forward.

What It Means

As hard as it will be for the Bruins fans who associate much of the team’s success on their run to the 2011 Stanley Cup to Tim Thomas to say goodbye, it’s not as bad as it looks.

Not only does Thomas get to go out while still playing well and having the affection of the crowds, he is leaving the team in good hands. Not only is there a future star goalie in Tuukka Rask in the wings, but there is a young core that will win for years.

This is a huge loss, but it’s one that Boston can afford to shoulder.

What’s Next?

Thomas’ departure means it’s Tuukka Rask's time to shine in the Boston.

While Thomas will be sorely missed, he is not being replaced by just some journeyman scrub the Bruins picked up to fill the void. Rask has been the long-term plan to replace Thomas when he called it a career; that time just came sooner than the team thought.

As hard as it will be for the team to overcome the loss of a goalie as talented as Thomas, Rask will ease the blow.

As for Thomas' career, there will be a job in another city when he is ready to return, but it's unlikely to be Boston.
