I believe that it does run on roughly 9V, but I think their logic behind using a power supply has more to do with power consumption. I'm guessing that because it's using a DSP chip, it would drain batteries why too fast to make them practical. Also (not to sound like a super granola) batteries are awful for the planet. Also also, Sanyo has started making a battery pack for pedal boards for those who are worried about noise issues. Check it.
