I don't care what anyone says, metal has always had an inner "social" structure, as with any subculture.
If anything, I should have made it clear in this thread it should be about music rather than social structure. Fans of music don't need to be part of a social clique.. yet, metal has always had ones inside of it. I'm interested in hearing what NEH has to say about this, but then again, who really cares?
