I like the fact that it isn't all zombie killing, and they actually take the time to display what the human emotion would be like during an cataclysmic event such as a zombie apocalypse. It makes it a lot more interesting and realistic.

As for it not following the comics, I wouldn't know because I never read the comics. However, as Mark said, it's probably better off that way because it keeps even the hardcore readers in a somewhat suspenseful level, unlike the Lord of the Rings movies (never read those books either) that apparently followed the books exactly, and everyone knew exactly what was happening and it kind of killed the story for them. Another good example is the Resident Evil movies. They didn't follow the story of the video games at all, the first one didn't even have the same characters as the first game.
