Just for clarification: I do believe I know what the problem is. When in .wav format, any peaks that are clipping (above +0dbs, generally in the red) will not cause the artifact you speak of.... however when converted to mp3, it will cause the artifact of clipping/popping anytime the signal rises above that limit.
