As for Walt, sigh, He was supposed to be a very important character in the show, but when the writers strike hit he aged too fast to still be able to play the role so they wrote him out. As another tidbit: Ben Linus was only supposed to be a very small role (he was signed on for just a couple episodes) but people liked him so much they rewrote his part, and made him leader of the others.
