Wherever you would be, there was at least oxygen, water and (usually) plant and animal life.

In space, if the machine fails, you die.

But, on another level, it's pretty similar. Leave the known and take a bunch of tools and go set up civilization somewhere else. It's just that we have better tools now (in addition to the average voter, who is the biggest tool ever).
