If you're quick enough switching plugs your machine won't both looking for a new address via DHCP. It'll keep the IP address he got through the modem. If you haven't done it already... plug into the router and THEN reboot and see what you get via ifconfig (rebooting easier than explaining how to renew IP in these situations).
