your pencil sharpener has an electric motor in it.
electric motors basically alternate on and off and work with the "clay" magnets that are on the sides of the inside of the motor. (top left)

so when you turn on your sharpener, you kick of a big enough EM field to cause an effect on your monitor.

why is the monitor effected by magnets? well, that's simple.. sort of.. in side a monitor is a cathode ray tube. this basically fields electrons in a gun,

and bends then with guess what?
magnets!
and ther you go

I'm glad all that physics is good for something.
but wait.. what the fuck are you doing with a pencil sharpener?
I haven't touched a pencil since the 70's.
