Syria + Iran are in support of HAMAS' strikes and feel their right to strike is needed.
Cynical or not about religion, one must also take into consideration that the cultures over there are much more bonded with their religion(s) than we are here. Of course, that's not for 100% of the people here, but over there, it's a way of life. They literally live and die by their beliefs.

I think the true conflict of this situation goes back to the original Crusades in the Medieval times, as well as the tribal wars and conflicts a thousand years before. It is a place such rich in history, culture, and religion, and that's why it will ultimately lead to the demise of mankind. One wrong move, and when the big brothers and big sisters get involved, a much bigger war will ensue. This is just the beginning.
